Wire Taps: Washington Nationals Winter Meetings Chatter - Prince Fielder, Chris Marrero.

• FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal and Jon Morosi shook up NatsTown with their reports yesterday about the Washington Nationals talking Prince FielderMLB.com's Bill Ladson's report last night about Chris Marrero's injuries was interesting for two reasons. One, the Nats were apparently considering having the 23-year-old first baseman fill a bench role at the major league level (Lombardozzi as utility man?) and B) With Marrero expected to miss the start of Spring Training in a best-case-scenario, the Nats might actually need to explore a first base option now since Adam LaRoche is still working to recover from significant shoulder surgery. Of course they could bring Michael Morse back to first, but that opens up another hole in the outfield...It's all speculation at this point, but the Nats are going into the Winter Meetings with their name once again in the headlines. WWRD? What Will Rizzo Do? It's link time...

All this Fielder talk lately

has seemingly set me up for a huge letdown. I’m going to go back to telling myself “they should, but they won’t”.

I'm curious about where it's coming from

The Nats’ regular beat reporters all seem to believe it’s not happening, but every other sportswriter and broadcaster in the world has seemingly had him in a curly W cap since midsummer…

by rarumberger on Nov 29, 2011 12:16 PM EST up reply actions

Boras, most likely. Using the Nats to inflate the market. (Assuming there’s not actually anything there, of course).

by brs03 on Nov 29, 2011 1:14 PM EST up reply actions

It just doesn't seem to make sense

The Nats most glaring hole on offense is CF and as a team it would seem to be an innings-eating starter or two, why would they not spend the money on Buerhle/Oswalt/Wilson and spend it on Fielder instead? Only way it makes sense to me is if they’ve got a trade in place for a pitcher if they sign Fielder. Harper is only a year or so away, why would they want to lock up someone long-term when they have so much offense in the minors? Harper could be a bust, so could Rendon and so could Norris, but all three of them being a bust isn’t too likely and even 2 of 3 is a stretch.

Ross Detwiler will have a breakout year...Believe It!...and I'm serious this time!

Hello Everyone

About 1 week ago I became a new life-long Nationals fan and left behind a lifetime of support for the Orioles.
It is good to call this site my new home.
I wake up everyday alive with excitement about baseball again and the hope of good meaningful baseball in my life.
I am looking forward to spending Summers with you guys.
Go Nats!

Welcome aboard!

Since DC has wandered in the baseball wilderness for so long before the Nats came to town, many of us here have other teams that we root for to varying degrees. So feel free to wish the O’s well even while you immerse yourself in Nats Town :-)

Posted This Somewhere Else.....

And it got a bunch of “Likes” so I figured I’d share it here as well. I usually don’t post “goofy” stuff here, but since it seemed to be liked elsewhere, I thought I’d bring it over.

Everyone has an opinion and prediction…..so here’s mine: The Nats will sign Fielder, Reyes and CJ Wilson, and then trade for either Ethier or McCutchen. This will propel the Nats to first place in the NL East, and an easy WS Championship, because Reyes will play healthy the remainder of his career, and Fielder will learn from the mistakes of Dmitri Young and go on a diet. Nats Park will lead MLB in attendance in 2012, and the parade down Constitution Avenue in October 2012 will be marvelous! The tough part will be the offseason after the 2012 season….trying to figure out “which” blue chip players we actually “allow” to come to DC. The next CBA will be another session to figure out how to screw the Nats even more, because we all know how much Bud Selig loves the Nats. At least Peter Angelos will finally gain from a “championship team” in the money he will steal away in TV revenue…..God knows that the O’s will never earn him any championship money. And BTW….yes Montreal, we will gladly allow you to also celebrate with us….you will have deserved it, eh.

and then

Mike Rizzo mind controls Scott Boras and then all #1 prospects only choose to play for the nationals and they have to create a new league for the nationals where the nationals are tken out of the NL and the winner of the world series will have the right to face the nationals only to lose miserably. Then the miami heat get jealous and then federalbaseball will be the only site where baseball is discusssed and then finally the orioles finally win 80 games in a season

Good times to be had by all.

Oh, yeah, and let’s not forget the Nationals will win the series against the Yankees AGAIN this year, keeping the Nationals as the only team the Yankees have never beaten in a series!

regular-season or post-season series (or both)? :-p

Both, of course.

Note: I’m “pretty sure” this is true. I’ve heard it, but I don’t have the data to prove it. I’m sure dc_guy would be happy to fill in the details.

by RobBobS on Nov 29, 2011 2:39 PM EST up reply actions

It's true

The Nationals took 2 of 3 in DC (including Zim’s walkoff versus CMW) at RFK in 2006, and also took 2 of 3 in NY in 2009, the year that the Nationals went 59-103 and the Yankees went 103-59 and won the World Series. Baseball’s kinda funny that way.

For double irony, John Lannan outdueled CMW for a 3-2 win in 2009; Wang probably joined the Nationals because he realized he couldn’t beat them :-D

by d_c_guy on Nov 29, 2011 2:55 PM EST up reply actions

I was pretty certain about this part.

The part I was not so sure of is if the Yanks had managed to beat all the other (NL) teams in interleague play (or in the World Series).

Funny thing….even though I received a bunch of “likes” on the other board, I did get the one, “hehe, hoho, haha, they’re coming to take me away” comment! Hilarious! You’d have to know the song to truly get it, but that was classic!

Thanks everyone

On Orioles blogs I would have been destroyed by lots of Sabermathticians about how this is going to be the Orioles year.
Instead I’m reading about how aggressive the Nationals are about improving their team. I am 1 week into this and I am having a blast.
Thank you all.

Here is my plan for the Marrero injury

well, it was actualy part of my plan before that, but now is a good time to try and sell it. The guy we should sign incase something happens to LaRoche is..

Greg Dobbs, and here is why we should sign him. The first and biggest reason is he will be cheap to sign. The next reason is that while idealy he is a bench player for you, and thats where I had him sloted in, you could do worse that Dobbs filling in every day while LaRoche rehabs, or another OF is avalible. He could also play the OF, and 3B so if something happens to Zimm, he could also step up. He also has value once LaRoche comes back, providing decent power of the bench, and a decent average to go with the power.

I would approve of Dobbs

Even if they signed Fielder, he could still be a very valuable bench player.

Booo Ladson

Michael Cuddyer an option for the Nats? He’s got a good bat and is good defensively. Would the Nats consider starting Werth in center and let Cuddyer take over in right?
— Jon D., Poolesville, Md.

I don’t see how Cuddyer is a fit. I see Bryce Harper playing right field before the Nationals consider acquiring a player like Cuddyer.

Harper would play OF when LaRoche is traded, and Morse will slot into first. Werth for CF!
