How would you replace the runs lost in the OF? Would you bring in OF help or go with Roger Bernadina? Also, with the ability to move Michael Morse to the OF, is this the opportunity to sign Prince Fielder?

LaRoche
Not likely that the Nats spend on someone like Pena or Branyan, they should have a recovered Adam LaRoche. Right? What is his projected numbers?
Why does this not include defense?
Replacing Morse’s contribution in the outfield should be easy as he is a terrible defender there. Fangraphs’ UZR has him at -7.9 runs below a replacement player on defense last season. If he’s replaced with a player with positive defensive contribution, that player wouldn’t have to hit very well to replace Morse there. Bernadina might be an upgrade defensively, but his bat is below-average. He looks like a fourth OF, replacement-level player.
Also, where is Bryce Harper in this discussion? I don’t think you want an expensive FA in left in case Harper is ready to come up by mid-season.
Has anyone heard how well Cespedas plays defense? His video made it clear he’s very proud of his hitting. He’d be a risky pickup for a team without a clear alternative position for him in the outfield.
Don't rely on UZR
especially given the microscopic sample size.

I've watched Morse play defense
He’s more a danger to himself than to fly balls. Defense is hard to quantify, but Morse is bad in the OF. First base is perfect for him.
In 2010, I would have agreed with you
But he performed quite adequately in 2011 in the outfield, IMO.

Ummm....
UZR wildly overrates defense at 1B and places too much emphasis on a first basemen’s range and not enough on his real job of digging balls out of the dirt. Not to mention that UZR from one year to another can vary wildly. I put very little stock in a 1B’s UZR and no stock in a single season’s worth of UZR.

There are some slap hitters in the HoF
Wade Boggs. Rod Carew. Pete Rose. Having a slap hitter, especially one with speed, bat in front of power hitters is not a bad thing. You don’t need to have 8 guys with power playing the field to win at baseball.

Quite right
I started out with HoF guys and just continued thinking about slap hitters. And that’s not even considering slap hitters that may not have a very good case for being IN the Hall (Rabbit Maranville and Phil Rizzuto, I’m looking at you!). Brett Gardner has 15 career home runs in three+ seasons, but he’s still not a bad player to have on your team.

Get'r done Riz....
The Giants did want LaRoche at one point in time. Also, LaRoche isn’t bogged down by those fancy statz like OBP that Sabean loathes.

I didn't take in UZR in these projections
I merely wanted to take a look at how runs can be replaced. I didn’t put Harper on here just because I didn’t have projections for him, but I’m sure assuming he comes up sometime in 2012, he can play LF and Morse is at 1B right?
Unless they sign Fielder
Then Morse stays in LF and Werth moves to CF. Great graph though, haters gonna hate.

while the chart is nice and all in projecting offense with someone like Fielder it doesnt take into account 1) defense (as pointed out) and 2) the future – as in, with Morse in the OF and Fielder locked up at 1B do you really want Werth as your long-term solution in CF when Harper comes up? Sure that’s a nasty offense but … it would look an awful lot like the Caps of 2-3 yrs ago.

Or like the current WS champions. Werth is not THAT bad in center, and I think that after another year under his belt Harper will be able to play center as well.

Current WS champs
Wouldn’t have even made it if the Braves hadn’t collapsed, they’d have been at home and wouldn’t be the WS champs if Ron Washington was a decent manager.

My favorite poll question on "what to do about CF" is the response "re-sign Gomes and platoon with Bernadina"
I’m just imagining Gomes in CF …
I shouldn't have put Gomes in there. Too optimistic that the big dude could play CF.
My mental lapse. My bad. Heh.

Too optimistic that the big dude could play CF OF.
His attitude was welcome. Unfortunately, the talent doesn’t match it. He couldn’t stick as a DH with Tampa, and went on to butcher LF and RF for Cincinnati and the Nats. He’s a consensus Iron Glove candidate.
Love his “take no prisoners” approach on the bases, though, and from all accounts he was a hoot in the clubhouse …

I still have the filly game he won on the walkoff HBP saved on our DVR.
Watched the end of it again just last night. Between that and Desi’s two-out, two-strike dinger to tie it the bottom of the 9th, great game.
