This Offseason makes no sense

alright so I know that I am not the only one to comment on the fact that the Nationals have not accomplished anything this offseason but from what I see as a lack of effort to improve the team just really frustrates me. With the whole issue about obtaining a front of the order pitcher to mentor the young arms in the rotation ( zimmermann and strasburg) it is reported that we want to go out and get Roy Oswalt who couldnt pitch more than 25 games last year because of a bad back (which I also dont understand why you would try and rely on someone that couldn't finish an entire season as your mentor to your young pitchers). Then comes the rumors that we want to go after Mark Buerhle and we low ball what we offer him. Lets be honest, I dont think anyone could reasonably expect Buerhle to pick up and leave Chicago, a city that he has played in his entire career, to potentially make just as much or less money than what he was offered by the White Sox. Now dont get me wrong, at least we put in a bid for his services but to not put in a bid for Darvish or Aoki makes absolutely no sense in my opinion.

The main frustrating point about the Nationals this offseason in my opinion is the fact that they came out and said last summer after signing Jayson Werth that we were turning the corner and entering "Phase II". This offseason, what I can figure phase II to be is letting everybody else in the division get better while we sink back to last place next season. To let the Marlins, a team that was pretty dreadful last season come out and completely outspend you and in my opinion surpass you talent wise is completely unacceptable. Yes the Marlins had good talent last year in Johnson, Stanton, Morrison and Ramirez but you pretty much let them get Heath Bell, Jose Reyes, Mark Buerhle and they are talking about signing Prince Fielder as well, this just doesnt make sense. I think that based on the effort the front office has put forth this offseason is completely pathetic and it will show come opening day.

I also just wanted to throw another idea out there for ya'll to think about which I think is very evident right now. I believe that the fiasco that went on with the Nationals last year with Jim Riggleman is really coming back to haunt the front office. Not being willing to even talk about an extension with your current manager and just letting him walk out the door because you dont want to discuss a new contract with him sends a really bad message to free agents and I think that is a main reason why we are having a problem getting people to want to come here and play so at the end of the day, I say thank you Rizzo for putting us in this position because you werent even willing to discuss a contract extension with our manager at the time.

Geez, I'm no fan of the offseason and I don't go this far

The Nationals didn’t “low ball” Buehrle – a lot of teams were after Buehrle (go back and re-read the threads on mlbtraderumors). A lot of teams dropped out early – the Nationals were the #2 team. Did Buehrle take the time to talk about any other team offers when he signed with the Marlins? No – he talked about how close the Nationals had come and how Rizzo had impressed him. They just weren’t willing to beat the Marlins best and final offer. Whatever that is, it’s not “low balling.” The White Sox weren’t offering Buehrle as much as the Nationals were – the White Sox are rebuilding and trying to cut payroll, so investing in a mid-30’s free agent pitcher was not on their agenda.

I find the idea that players who are free agents are for one second considering the Riggleman brouhaha in making decisions to be absolutely and in all ways inconceivable.

I am frustrated that the Nationals didn’t bid on Darvish or Aoki. I have to admit there is some chance that they scouted them and just decided that Darvish isn’t worth $100+ million and Aoki is not a major league player. But I worry that the team is overvaluing its own players. I’m not intimidated by the Marlins at this point, but they will be more competitive. I can’t see the Nationals finishing behind the Mets in 2012, but a slip back to fourth is quite possible. With the chances to improve that they’ve had this offseason that would be very disappointing.

I do think that word means what you think it means

I agree completely with your first two paragraphs. While I agree basically with the third, what I don’t want to see is Rizzo making a panic signing just to say “see? we can sign free agents if we want to!” (As I’ve commented elsewhere) that smacks of Steinbrenner in the period between the 1981 and 1975 seasons, and Angelos for the past 12 (or,since he fired Davey).

Maybe Rizzo ran the same comps as HG_VA did in his recent fanpost, and decided Aoki wouldn’t contribute any more offense than did Ankiel last year. Maybe he also decided that $120-140 million (combined posting fee and contract) was too much to invest in Darvish. And maybe he decided that the Rule 5 candidates (including a couple of minor league OF prospects who might have filled in at CF, or at least served as bench depth) weren’t worth it.

Things can change between now and ST, but it’s looking more and more like Rizzo and Davey are going to play the hand as dealt. Hopefully Werth can cover enough CF to compensate for Morse’s limited range in LF and whomever ends up in RF. Hopefully Wang can continue to improve with another off-season between him and his shoulder surgery. Hopefully Detwiler has a breakthrough year, and Lannan is as eye-bleedingly effective as in 2011. Hopefully the FA signings they have made gives Davey enough hairy chests for his bench.

That’s a lot to hope for.

If they end up signing Fielder

it won’t seem to me to be a “sign someone just to say you signed someone” move; it would seem to me to be exactly what they should have done the whole time. Other options remaining are not so exciting.

It wouldn't seem like that to me, either

I was thinking more along the lines of the Orioles signing Derrek Lee last year. I suppose you could also classify ALR in that category, although I didn’t think so at the time…

Not too upset..........

We missed on Buehle. He would have been a nice pickup.
We were not going to unload DEZ and two other players for Upton then sign Reyes.
There is short list of CF’s to trade for.
I don’t beleive in signing Japanese players.

I am for signing both Fielder and Oswalt. Can live with/without that deal.

Two interesting ideas are trades for Adam Jones or Mccutcheon of Pittsburg. Both safer players then Upton……..
