Lerners Are Cheap

The Lerners won't give us the chance to build a competitive team long-term.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/nationals/nationals-have-more-cash-coming-in-but-refuse-to-spend-it/2011/12/21/gIQAkDUIAP_story.html

I fully believe that Rizzo would have gone after Darvish if he had the funds to do so. We could have Fielder.

MLB needs to step in.

Spread the word, we need an internet revolution!!!!!

Lerners Are Cheap!

Because wait…..the team doesn’t go out and overspend on everyone? Pay 52mil just for the rights to negotiate with an UNPROVEN player that will take another 50mil+ just to sign? Pay millions to outbid on pitchers who are not worth the amount of money or years that it will take to get them? Because they did not pay 300mil for a 10 year contract on a player who likely won’t last another 6 years? Or because they have not already paid close to the same for another one who won’t be worth what he will actually get (although, I admit that I AM on the Fielder bandwagon)? Because the team is making wise decisions, they are cheap? I guess the fact that the executives are attempting to make wise baseball decisions have never come into play. I guess the fact that MLB saw a need to institute new rules in the draft, partially because of the big spending Nats, gives the ownership no respect either. We had to hear all this garbage last year when the team failed to re-sign Dunn….that now seems like a brilliant move, doesn’t it. The only revolution we need, is to stop the silly nonsense that the ownership is cheap. That won’t be tested until we see what the team does with players like Zim, Strasburg, Harper, etc, when THOSE big contracts come into play.

This. A thousand times.

I’ll admit that I was sad to see the Nationals not bid on Aoki. I wanted the Nationals to get Buerhle, but not at the price the Marlins paid. Buerhle wii need to either improve is average WAR to be worth his contract, given his age, that seems unlikely to happen.

A number of good SP options still exist for the Nationals. The Nationals haven’t really missed on any big CF options this year; I am assuming that the Nationals scouts said Aoki wasn’t worth any price. If the Nationals simply thought that Aoki would cost $25 million and thus didn’t submit a low bid, then that is a problem but it doesn’t seem likely that happened.

Don't take Boswell as gospel

He got away from it after Werth’s signing (then complained that it was excessive), but he’s back to his old tricks. He’s also ignoring inconvenient facts like: the Nats did bid on Buehrle, losing out because they wouldn’t offer a fourth year to a 30-something pitcher; 28 other clubs refused to pay $51 million for the right to sign Darvish to a $70 million dollar contract; etc.

Sometimes Boz makes me [spit!]

Lerners' cheap? Is this a big surprise?

I blogged 5 years ago as to how it appeared the Lerner’s would run the Nats.
For a moment last year when the Nats went after Werth, I thought maybe someone in the Lerner family saw the light. Then I realized the only reason they went after Werth was that they had just received a bundle from TV revenue sharing. This is how the Angels got Pujols and Wilson. The Lerner’s are not fooling any one with their business strategy. The Lerner’s business model is, as I said years ago , “Pay as you go”! In other words, the fans must come , and fill the stadium first before the Lerner’s might spend above and beyond their revenue. Now the Lerner’s are due to get another big TV revenue bundle this summer($30 mil) which is the amount the Angels received and promptly went out and got Pujols. So as far as I am concerned, they could easily get a big name, but we all know that is wishful thinking. Here’s a question nobody seems to be asking lately. Will Zimmerman be back in 2013? I doubt it. Zim said he wanted to get a new contract this winter ( He does not like to negotiate during the season). Spring training is just a month or so around the corner, and I have heard nothing from the Nats on signing Zim. Trust me, if the Nats do not Zimmerman before the start of this season,. it’s bye-bye Zim’s, a free agent in 2013. He’ll probably go to the Phils. They have the team and the money, plus they need a new third baseman. Look at the Marlins, averaging probably about 13000 a game, and who they signed. They want a champion team. The Lerner’s do not. I predicted in 2007 that the Lerners’ will sell the Nats and make a big profit sometime between 2016-2019 time frame. They are not baseball lovers, but real estate business people, and cheap ones at that.

Link for Zim saying he wants a deal done this offseason?

I know his agent said that there have been no discussions (and Rizzo saying that there have been, that both sides want to have Zim in DC for a long time), but I haven’t seen anything from Zimmerman expressing any sort of frustration, displeasure, etc. If he has said anything about it, I would be more interested in seeing it done. Right now it seems to me that the party that wants to wait would be Zimmerman, to re-establish himself as a truly premier player that can be counted on to play 150+ games.

Zimmerman is under contract for two more years

And, by the way, everybody around here wonders when/if Zim will resign.

If I were Rizzo, I’d wait ‘till after 2012 because I’m having growing concerns that Zim is a bit fragile, which could make a long-term deal a very risky proposition.

And if I were Zimmerman I'd wait until after 2012, too

Because I’d want to establish my value as a true premier player rather than coming off a down season with injuries and adjustments affecting both the bat and glove

IMHO, the Lerners aren't cheap.

They’re just not Loria. Thank God.
