My thoughts on Gio Gonzalez
The trade in question would include any 4 out of Cole, Peacock, Hood, Norris, and Perez
Worst case scenario would be Cole, Peacock, Hood, and Norris
Losing Cole and Peacock would leave the Nationals with Meyer, Purke, Solis, Ray, Detwiler, and Milone in the system with a rotation headed by Stras, Gio, and Zimm
Losing Hood would suck, but the Nationals would still have Harper, Goodwin, and Taylor
Losing Norris would mean the Nationals no longer have any decent catching prospects, but I'm convinced Ramos is the catcher of the future as long as he doesn't get injured
I just don't see how the Nationals can lose this trade

Solano is a decent catcher. Maldonado is an acceptable backup.
There’s a couple of guys lower that profile to me as “defense-first backup catcher” who could make it to the majors on those terms.

AJ Cole projects as a potential no. 1 or 2 starter
We overpaid to get him, and he’s a B+ prospect according to John Sickels. It seems real hard to part with both him and Peacock.
Waiting to bang my drum in parades for the Nats and Caps.
well yea
but there’s a point where you are giving up too much for not enough
as a marlins fan I love the idea of Cole, Peacock, Norris and Milone leaving the division for Gio (a #2 starter)
I don’t think the nationals are good enough to win the division this year, I don’t think Gio changes that
maybe as some talent filters up into the majors before 2015 the nationals will have a shot at the division and Gio clearly helps that fight.
But the real window to win a World Series would probably open up about 2014, and yes Gio will be a Nat then. But the talent traded away reduces the nationals chance to create the Team that I think would have dominated the NL for years.
(for the record I love AJ Cole as a Prospect, I was a bit disappointed the marlins didn’t draft him in the 1st round)

can't believe
Cole/Peacock/Milone were all sent by the Nats. I understand the move by Rizzo, but ouch.
This is a massive mistake.
Huge win by the A’s.
much as I'm somewhat partial to the Nats being in the area
I have to agree with this. understand the move, but ouch. Huge win for the A’s, but it feels like the Nationals are playing for now, so they better find a way to solidify the top of the lineup.
Sorry guys...
but you got hosed for this guy. Very overrated. I wouldn’t have given Norris and Cole alone.
