Washington Nationals: Spring Training Begins For Pitchers And Catchers.

• What We Learned On Day One Of Spring Training:

1. Jesus Flores is Back. - via @NationalsPR.

2. Chien-Ming Wang likely won't be ready for Opening Day. MLB.com's Bill Ladson on Twitter (@washingnats)

3. Jordan Zimmermann On MLB Network Radio: First things first. If you're visiting Viera, Florida, Space Coast Stadium and the Washington Nationals in their Spring home, 24-year-old, '07 2nd Round right-hander Jordan Zimmermann recommends Carrabba's Italian Grill. Zimmermann's also a Packers fan by birth, having grown up in Auburndale, Wisconsin, and he laughed when asked if it was more satisfying for a Packers fan to have beaten the Chicago Bears in the NFC title game or the Steelers in the Super Bowl before saying the championship win was the one that counted. He was a Favre fan til the QB went to Minnesota, then he was with Aaron Rodgers. Having recovered from elbow reconstruction surgery to return to the mound late last season, the top pitching prospect in the system before Stephen Strasburg arrived is now finally 100% and ready to pick up where he left off in 2009. Zimmermann's apparently a man of few words but he shared some of them with MLB Network Radio hosts Jim Bowden and Mike Ferrin on Inside Pitch this afternoon.

Star-divide

4. "I feel great and I feel strong, and I mean, I had a good offseason," Zimmermann said when asked about his recovery from Tommy John surgery, "I'm ready to go and finally, I guess it's good to be back down here and be able to go out every day and not have any limitations and be able to go with everyone else and do what everyone else is doing. I feel strong and I just want to go out and have a good year and pitch the way I know I can pitch." The right-hander taken out of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point with Washington's compensation pick for losing outfielder Alfonso Soriano to the Cubs, was (3-5) with a 4.63 ERA, 3.59 FIP, 2.86 BB/9 and 9.07 K/9 in his first 16 starts and 91.1 IP after debuting in April of 2009, but the elbow injury ended his first major league season in mid-July of '09.

5. "Among those position players already in Viera: [Ryan] Zimmerman, [Jayson] Werth, [Nyjer] Morgan, [Ian] Desmond, [Danny] Espinosa and [Brian] Bixler*." - via @NationalsPR

6. Brian Bixler = 28-year-old IF/OF, Pittsburgh Pirates' '04 2nd Round pick who was traded to Cleveland for IF/OF Jesus Brito (1/18/10) and then back to Pittsburgh for a PTBNL (7/12/10) before he was acquired by the Nats from the Indians for cash on 8/7/10. Bixler put up a .285/.347/.389 slash line with 18 doubles, four triples, four HR's and 18 stolen bases in 102 games and 411 plate appearances between each team's Triple-A affiliate.

7. Zimmermann worked his way back in a little over 12 months, making ten starts at three levels of the Nats' system before returning to the majors in late August. In seven starts with the Nationals, Zimmermann K'd 27 (7.84 K/9) and walked 10 (2.9 BB/9), surrendering 17 ER, 8 HR's and 31 hits in 31.0 IP. Asked how close he is to the pitcher he was before the injury at this point, Zimmermann said, "I think I'm pretty close. My fastballs last year were, I mean, right up there, I mean, maybe down a mile an hour or two, but I feel strong and I think my curveballs gotten a lot better since surgery, so I feel good." As far as when he finally felt confident that his elbow was fully recovered, Zimmermann said, "When I got back down to Spring Training [in 2010], and was throwing outside and threw about 120 ft and felt great and felt that I could air it out. Once I got to that point I knew I was pretty much ready to go."

8. Tyler Clippard's in Florida. - via MLB.com's Bill Ladson (@washingnats)

9. Zimmermann's return to the rotation is every bit as important as the additions he mentions as being the big three the Nationals made this winter, LHP Tom Gorzelanny, RF Jayson Werth and 1B Adam LaRoche. The third-year starter also mentions right-handed relievers Adam Carr and Cole Kimball as two people he's excited to see pitch this Spring. Zimmermann was then asked about which catcher he prefers throwing to from the choices he has on the Nats' roster.

The 23-year-old Wilson Ramos crossed paths with Zimmermann in Syracuse last August and in D.C. in September as both worked their way up to Washington. "It doesn't really matter for me, but Ramos is a big target back there and he frames the ball pretty well," Zimmermann said, "and I've thrown to him quite a bit when I was coming up through the minors there and then last year towards the end. I probably threw to him five, ten times, so, I like throwing to him and I mean, Pudge? Who doesn't like throwing to a Hall of Famer? So...and I just saw [Jesus] Flores today and he looks good, I mean, he's completely healed and it's going to be fun to see those three go at it in Spring Training."

10. "Jesus Flores is 100 percent. Last year at this time he couldn't throw the ball back to the pitcher." Washington Post's Adam Kilgore (@AdamKilgoreWP)

It seems like it's been forever

But now it’s officially Spring, thank goodness!

Not really for me.

If it flew by at all, it’s because I have had good folks like you all to share the loneliness with.

May this be the last spring the nats are in this section of Verducci's ST list for a long, long time
10. Baseball Hell

Kansas City, Baltimore, Washington and Pittsburgh aren’t just bad. They are bad beyond logic. It’s remarkable how these teams can stay so far down for so long with revenue sharing, draft advantages, the faster flow of information, front office turnover, etc. — essentially remaining outside this period of parity.

Over the past seven years, the Royals, Orioles, Nationals and Pirates are 0-for-28 when it comes to winning seasons. Moreover, they have lost 91 games or more 22 times in those 28 seasons, including 93-plus losses for all four in each of the past two years.

But hey, today all of them are a most beautiful 0-0, and baseball in February is not important for how well it is played but simply for having returned. So go ahead, whether your team is in The Corridor or not: dream on.

OTLs are worthless in the playoffs

I got to walk around the Orioles ST complex a little and it was soooo nice to see the green grass, manicured fields and hear the crack of the bats. Unfortunately the batting cages were in what looks like a big barn and I couldn’t see inside. I didn’t want to rush the building and risk getting tased.

Won’t be long now.

Jealous of you on the one hand but glad that there will be another active FBer on the ground to offer some first hand accounts.

Wang not ready for openeing day!

That is a TOTAL shock

What about Zoidberg?

by Meatface on Feb 15, 2011 2:31 AM EST reply actions

My first and only Wang post.........

in the histroy of posting………What is this guys problem? More then the STRAS fanboys last spring. And the current Harper fanboys of this winter. Nothing iriatates me more then “this guy is reallying going to help the team”………… Is this Wang guy ever going to pitch for this team?………Any help will be greatly appreciated

by artistfork on Feb 15, 2011 9:46 AM EST reply actions

He’s just another quality baseball player coming back from a bad injury. Toss him in the same pile as Zimmermann, Strasburg, Flores, Marquis and Detwiler. If he pitches like he used to pitch before his injury, he will be an asset to the team. That same if applies to a lot of guys on our team, but it should not disqualify Wang just because we have not seem him pitch for us yet.

by dc Roach on Feb 15, 2011 10:02 AM EST up reply actions

Wang's problem? He's been injured, recovering from a rare shoulder problem

It’s not Wang’s fault the Nationals are willing to take a $1,000,000 flyer on him regaining his effectiveness. He’s not old, so it’s not a bad bet. But you’re right, anything the Nationals get out of Wang is gravy, they can’t really expect/count on getting anything out of him. I’ll root for him when he shows up to pitch, and other than that I don’t worry about him.

I do hope he makes it, not only because it would be good for the Nationals but because I enjoyed watching him in pinstripes and I always hope a player makes it back from injury. Keeping my fingers crossed on both Wang and Flores.

by d_c_guy on Feb 15, 2011 10:02 AM EST up reply actions

Can't imagine the Nats would reinvest if there wasn't some hope he'd get back on the mound...

The surgery is apparently not a common one amongst baseball players. Rizzo always compared it to Drew Brees’ shoulder surgery and he came back. Not counting on Wang but he’s putting in the effort to get back and doing so at a discount this year…

I would just like to know if he feels he will be pitching in the minors on a rehab

stint at the start or shortly after the start of the regular season. I would say that having Wang, Maya, and Detwiler all in Syracuse and ready to come up to the big club as soon as the first starter gets hurt or falters is a reasonable way to start the season. Even better, if one of the AAA guys forces his way onto the big club with lights out pitching.

Rizzo has said that he’s likely to start on a rehab.

Is Baseball-Reference wrong? I always forget which were picks, and which comps?

B-R says Zim(n) was the comp pick?

Detwiler w/ 1st Rd, Smoker w/ 1st Rd Supp, Burgess w/ Supp for Guillen...

And Zim w/ the Cubs’ 2nd Rd pick as Comp.

Vivian Jaffe: "Have you ever transcended space and time?"
Albert Markovski: "Yes. No. Uh, time, not space... No, I don't know what you're talking about."

My bad. I now know a lot more about the 2007 draft class. ( Bad class BTW)

Smolinski was the 2nd rd pick for the Nats. I got confused with the words “compensation pick” i was thinking sandwich pick … Thanks for the correct info and sorry for my incorrect reading into said info.

I appeciate all repsonse's........

Yet “rare” appears to be the most definitive……… Because I swear this guy was suppose to be ready LAST JUNE……..Now he has had an entire winter and is still not ready…….I am about ready to put odds on STRAS pitching before this guy………….Thank again to eveyone…….

For the record,

I’m with you on this. It’s been two-and-a-half years since Wang last pitched effectively in the Majors. Even if he manages to become ‘healthy’ again soon, I have serious doubts that he’ll be “effective” any time this year.

This year will be the year that makes us all forget about last year.

what another 5 months on DL?

its lerner monopoly money anyway so who’s counting. just a low risk gamble, if it fails then no huge loss but there’s the one in a million chance that it could look like the smartest moves of the year once the season’s done
