"The Nationals today designated RHP Luis Atilano for assignment. This is a corresponding move to [Adam] LaRoche's contract being approved by MLB."

Not a big shock

In other news, the Garrett Mock lobby dances with joy.
As does Atahualpa Severino.
Craig Stammen wasn’t nervous….yet.

John Carlson: A real American hero taking names and settling scores.
Souldrummer: A regular guy trying to join Adam Dunn, Jordan Zimmermann, and Garrett Mock as one of RobBobS' guys.

I must say, this thing deserves to be green, but it’s already green as is.

Hope you make it to minor league camp!

Atilano's on that "iffy for day 1 Syracuse rotation"

Wang could be ready (though I doubt it)
Maya
Detwiler
Mock
Milone
Then you’ve got the whole DFA crew, all of whom will have a case for a repeat performance at Syracuse: Chico, Martin, Atilano, Martis as well as folks who started games at Syracuse last year like Barthmaier and to a lesser extent Mandel and Arnesen

Syracuse is even murkier than DC and I don’t know how many of those guys that they would send to Harrisburg where they are clearly too old for the level.

My money is on Wang doing extended spring training, and starting at Harrisburg after that some time around May 1

As for Syracuse, I think you’ve nailed the top four, and I think in Wang’s absence that last position is going to be a dogfight between the DFA guys over the remainder. Two guys will stick (one in the rotation, on in long relief) and the rest will just be … gone. Hard for the losers, but I think the Nats’ minor league organization has progressed to the point that there’s no room for perennial 4A guys any more (which is a good thing). I think that Martin and Atilano have a slight edge over Chico and Martis as we get under way (as evidenced by their being dropped from the 40 man roster later in the offseason).

I would be surprised if Atilano got picked up by another team. Not shocked, but surprised.

Barthmaier is a real wildcard for me. He has MLB experience, the Nats picked him up after long term injury and went through the whole instructs to time at Potomac. Don’t know if he’s a AA guy or a AAA guy but it seems to me that he’s more than the dreaded “organizational depth”.

Curious on thoughts from the floor if anyone knows anything about what they might be thinking with him. I replied in the Atilano thread at NationalsProspects.com on Barthmaier and I’m going to tweet something to the beat guys who follow me on twitter as well.

I don't see what you're seeing in this guy

i’ve never seen him pitch, but looking at his numbers, he looks like just another arm. decent K rates, but wild. with his third organization before age 27. his MLB “experience” was three starts in 2008 (two in late September) where he got POUNDED. just don’t see any reason for optimism on this guy.

Basically I remember some folks on the Nationalsprospects.com board talking about him

To me, that means people saw him at Potomac and saw a little something that caught there eye. Regardless of how good or bad he is, he may be trending upward while all of those DFAed guys are clearly trending downward related to Mock. Looking at Mock’s data, we don’t have but so much to go on with him. But we’ve all seen him pitch and know he has some stuff and intriguing enough to give a go round in Syracuse.

Seems to me upon reflection that Barthmaier is a Harrisburg starter with a little bit of intrigue but I’m curious to see what people who’ve scouted say about him. I don’t know if Tatusko or Roark has any chance to make Syracuse as well.

Regardless, there’s a whole bunch of questions at Harrisburg and Syracuse and I’m interested to see how the organization reacts.

My inquiries on Barthmaier are basically a heads up to anybody whose seen him in person to give us some kind of scouting report. Velocity, control, what he features, etc. etc.

Like I said, I don’t know much about him but I’m curious why you invest in rehabbing a guy like that if he’s only organizational depth. At this point, pretty much all of the DFAed guys are organizational depth.

Interesting to me how Severino continues to survive. I guess they feel somebody might pick him up as a LOOGY or something?

every team needs players to fill out rosters.

sometimes it’s just as simple as that. not every player signed to a minor league contract is a prospect.

Is Barthmaier as simple as that or Severino as simple as that? Slightly confused. I think you mean Barthmaier.

Shark Sighting:

@AdamKilgoreWP: Roger Bernadina got in today. Looks like he put on some muscle from last year. He admitted he “ran out of gas” last September. #Nats

So who tells Bernadina he had to use the Jaws theme as his at-bat music?

Man, that would be good if he'd do something like that.

I might start rooting for him to become full time if that happened. Bernadina may control his at bat music, but he doesn’t control the organist. We need a mole in the organist’s booth to get some power to rule the stadium.

I sure hope that they got the word to Luis before he got to Viera

Flying down to spring training, arriving at the facility only to get handed your walking papers would be pretty cold.
