Albert Pujols for President...Ok, First Baseman.

Let's consider a scenario:

It's 2012, Albert Pujols is your first baseman, Stephen Strasburg is a Cy Young candidate, Bryce Harper is a 2nd Year Phenom, and the Washington Nationals win the World Series. Crazy? Nope.

A championship caliber lineup: Zimmerman + Pujols + Harper + Werth. Sure, it's a little righty-heavy, but the Nats could easily pick up a lefty bat in the offseason.

Is Pujols worth $30 million/year? Yes. He's a gold glove first baseman. He's the most reliable and consistently awesome player this generation has seen. Can the Nats afford $30 million/year? Yes. (Jayson Werth's stupid contract is the only large expenditure we have on the books). Would Pujols really make the difference? Yes. Think: Cardinals + better bats around Pujols.

Just throwing it out there....

I think it could be done for about $100 million

We’re spending about $55 mil so far for 2012. Add Pujols ($30 mil), subract LaRoche ($8 mil) and you leave yourself some cash left over to fill one or two pitching spots with top of the line pitching. Ideally, LaRoche is included as a chip for pitching, but I don’t know what the trade market will look like.

Is it a smart move? I don’t know :)

Pujols would have to be offered more than $30 million to com to washington.

More like $33-36. It’s not like we are the only team that will look into signing him.

There won't be a lot of teams

with both money and need. The Nats are fortunate that both Boston and New York (Yankees) are pretty much set for first basemen for a while, and some other teams that might have a need and might have been able to flash that kind of cash around in the past (Mets, Cubs, Dodgers) are in financial disarray at the moment.

Bottom line: I doubt many teams will be offering anywhere near 30M.

Mets & Dodgers certainly have financial problems...

the Cubs are simply being forced to stay within budget by the new owners. That being said, after this season, there’s some salary coming off the books, and Ricketts might open the checkbook. Remains to be seen if it would include a run at Pujols, though. However, I wouldn’t mind seeing another team sign him just for the fun of tweaking Cardinals fans.

Harper's a lefty.

Wouldn’t be too righty hefty for me. I think we’ll have the money, but I don’t think he’d want to come here. Yes, he’d push us into October if we had homegrown pitching, but I’d be concerned that we’d be better off maintaining that 30M for free agent flexibility. I can’t believe that Pujols will be market rate WAR at that time although he’s certainly starting to run out of suitors if Yankees have Texeira and BoSox have Gonzalez.

I refuse to even worry about this until he and the Cardinals part ways

You can’t trade for him – what would you end up trading for Pujols (even if you reach agreement on a contract first)? It would decimate the Nationals’ farm system, which would adversely affect how competitive they could be even with Pujols.

Well, I guess we could trade them LaRoche …

If Pujol is unsigned through the season, then obviously the Nats would want to be players in the sweepstakes. With the Yankees (Texeira), Red Sox (AGon), and the Phillies (Howard) all out of the running the Nats would even have a chance. I sure wouldn’t want him going to Atlanta to play third and replace Chipper Jones though.

He's pretty much going to be a free agent

I would think ten or twelve teams could move guys around or trade their first baseman to make room for him. As it was with Werth, I think the Nats would have to add more years than anyone again to get him.

I think he's going to be a free agent

And then both sides will realize that they don’t have better options than each other and find a number that works.

Reports say the Card were offering < 23M

Absurd. No wonder he didn’t sign. He’s easily worth 28 and probably worth 30. The Nats have got to offer him what he wants, plus a bunch more for good measure.

But it’s about supply and demand. How many teams are going to want to go the distance in years and dollars to get Pujols? Especially if Prince Fielder (inferior though he may be) is also on the market.

There should be teams

and the Nats should be one of them.

If Pujols came to DC, it wouldn’t be so hard for me to embrace the Nationals 100% over the Cardinals (right now I’m still at about 50%, although my allegiance is definitely on the up and up).
