Reaction To Boras/Werth/Nats Column...
Just thought some of you might be interested to hear what some folks around the internet are saying about this morning's post entitled, "Scott Boras Explains Jayson Werth's 7-Year/$126 Million Dollar Deal With The Washington Nationals." Some thoughts from outside our bubble:

I appreciate all the postings about it and whatnot
But I am so. very. tired. of talking about the contract. It is what it is, the commitment has been made. Whether the contract was smart, dumb, or merely defensible, Werth will be playing RF this year.
With Andy Pettitte retiring today, I’m much more interested in seeing if we can package John Lannan and a middling prospect for Brett Gardner, or Lannan, Derek Norris and something else for Jesus Montero :-)
The contract is only stupid
If they let it be. Big money contracts or opverpays only hurt a team if it stops them from spending money in the future.

Hmmm? Hypothetical trade talk? Pass.
But I get what you’re saying, Boras’ explanation was just too interesting to ms not to share…

Albert Markovski: "Yes. No. Uh, time, not space... No, I don't know what you're talking about."

Yeah - no worries. Just my personal reaction :-)
I do think that the Nationals and Yankees could do some good for one another. And they obviously have a pretty good working relationship, having made a surprising number of deals recently.
What I don’t want is for the Nationals to become what the Athletics used to be in the 50’s and early 60’s – a de facto “AAAA” farm team for the Yankees. The trades haven’t really gone that way, though a deal for Lannan would be a bigger deal than they’ve made in the past.
Moving Lannan would be an interesting move
But I have a hard time seeing what major prospect they would get back in a year where he’s coming off injury.

Souldrummer: A regular guy trying to join Adam Dunn, Jordan Zimmermann, and Garrett Mock as one of RobBobS' guys.
His strong finish to last season pretty much lays to rest the "coming off injury" aspect
And also explains his uncharacteristic struggles at the start of last season. Given where the Nats are, any prospect they got for Lannan would have to be very nearly ML ready and also have a higher upside than Lannan (#3 starter). I’m not sure who that would be in the Yankee system. Jesus Montero is their top prospect. He’s a catcher, so for the Nats would be an odd mix. His bat is + though his defense is still a work in progress. Think of him as the uber-Norris. That’s why I was thinking that Lannan + Norris + a mid-level prospect wouldn’t be laughed at, although I don’t know if the Yankees would pull the trigger.
The Yankees are the other team (with the Nationals) that has serious catching depth in their organization; there has been some debate whether Jesus Montero or Austin Romine is really the catcher of the future there. With Pettitte retiring I do expect Montero to be moved now for pitching – the question is whether he will bring something better than Lannan. It’s possible the Yankees move Montero and two of the Banuelos/Betances/Brackman minor league starters for King Felix or another true TOR starter.
Why not Montero for catcher/DH and the other guy for defensive catcher?

Because for this season Jorge Posada is the catcher/DH
The Yankees picked up Russell Martin as the day-to-day catcher, and still have Francisco Cervelli (who started strong and faded as the season went on) as potential depth. Romine just got to AA ball last year and is probably at least a year or two away. The question is whether Montero (BA’s #4 overall prospect) starts at AAA where he can play every day, starts at the ML level rotating with Martin, or gets traded. A lot of Yankee fans suspect that he’s going to get traded for pitching.
Does make sense, I guess
I was thinking Montero starts at AAA, works on his defense, and his bat is injury insurance. If his defense is adequate, he demands a spot on the big league spot after the Super Two deadline and the defensive guy behind him is slated for next year.
I really think the Yanks need to semi-punt this year. Didn’t the BoSox do that one year to get younger.
Did you read the article on the Yanks trading for Barry Zito? What did you think about that?

I didn't see the article
But given his ridiculous contract, trading anything other than a bag of baseballs for Zito would be a mistake (IMHO).
Can't remember where I saw it right now.
Maybe it was Neyer. I can’t find it on Fangraphs.
