as it stands today...
who looks the best to you guys in the east?
atlanta? their pitching is still ridiculous, mccann, heyward…probabky freddie freeman bust things up this year.
florida? always dangerous if ramirez and josh johnson are healthy.
phillies? kind of amazing what a couple months can do. their rotation is still to die for, but at some point, you’re going to have to score runs. no werth’s a given, but the extended absence of utley and brown coupled w/ the continuing declines of rollins and howard could make this a season of reckoning as opposed to a coronation.
"the secret to a happy ending is knowing when to roll the credits"
Still Philly for now,
unless there is more bad news about Utley, he is the teams best player and the driving force of their offense.
Aim for the head baby Jesus
Agreed about Philly
I think it’s always amazing and kind of fun to watch teams that are way, way too over-hyped fail. The Phillies have a great rotation that includes three guys who are all on the wrong side of 30, but their offense—that took a hit with the loos of Werth—was non-existent in the NLCS last year and no one seemed all that concerned. Now that they’ve lost Utley and Brown (who was/is a bit overrated methinks) it’s apparent that they’re going to have a tough time just making the playoffs let alone winning 100 games.
Right now, I’d go with Atlanta.

Nice to see you around here again.
Hope you’re doing well.
It’s still the Phillies for me. They are starting to head into that tax bracket where if things aren’t going well they will make the midseason moves to make themselves better. I don’t know the system well enough, but you have to feel that they will be aggressive in making up for offensive losses given the the limited window for their current rotation. Future is now for that organization. Personally, you almost hope that they hang around and barely make a wildcard and then FAIL. You want them to stay close enough to be willing to mortgage their future out of desperation.

Thanks
Doing well, just have one of those jobs where I work in spurts. So I work real hard for a few months than not hardly at all for a few months.
Agreed on the Phillies, not sure how they’ll fail and I hope they get really close, just believe that when a team starts getting handed the trophy before a game has even been played, they almost always lose. Don’t know why that is, just know that it is. From a logical perspective though, I think they’re the best.
It's spring, and after working hard this winter, I'm in the best shape of my life.
Ross Detwiler will have a breakout year, believe it.
Nats, hands down.
Hey! It’s still spring!

Utley?
Its still that rotation of four and its still Philly………Remember two of those philly pitchers are going to have to take a dump before Philly falls out of 1st place……….Can Atlanta continue to play as well as they did last year? Although they do have an offense this year.

Sheinin's piece is great
Funny that Harper’s dad wants him to stay in Washington. I think we have to expect he’ll leave for the Yankees but hope for the best and enjoy the 6 years he’s here.
I wonder if Sheinin will follow Bryce around the minors this year? I assume not, since he did that last year, but ya never know. I do take issue with the idea that Strasburg is less likable cause he’s more introverted, though. But, I’m probbaly not a typical fan, I suppose.
Oh, and it looks like I’ve been caught by the awful Long Toss feature on Nats Journal. Ack.
sports reporters are kind of dorks...
a few years back when the o’s had bedard, he had a rep for being aloof and standoffish, but after actually watching a few of his post game interviews, it became pretty clear to me that he was being penalized by sports writers for not kissing their asses and serving up crash davis-isms. i thought his interviews were really funny, and maybe it came from not being a native english speaker, but he had a really dry sense of humor that definitely did not come through in print.

He's about done at this point
He was close last year. He had an early shot to make some noise against a smattering of big league competition, and now he’s back to Syracuse where he’s got to be hoping that a lot of the guys without options or that have Rule 5 status get booted. I like Wilkie personally as much as anybody, but at this point I’m hoping that he finds his way to an organization that doesn’t have a power/ground ball profile and doesn’t have as much depth so he’ll get a legitimate shot at a September call up sometime in his future.

FP Santangelo
I’m not a huge FP fan, but this was fairly encouraging:
When is it OK to use “us” or “we” while broadcasting?
“It’s never appropriate. I’m not wearing a uniform, so it’s not we. It’s absolutely against everything I’ve been taught as a broadcaster to ever say ‘we’ because I’m sitting up here with makeup on and a coat and a tie. So it’s the Nationals and it will always be the Nationals on every broadcast I do.
“I was taught by some of the best announcers in baseball – Jon Miller, Duane Kuiper, Mike Krukow and Dave Flemming, the broadcast crew for the Giants. One of the first things I learned was that you say ‘we’ when you’re wearing a uniform. I’m not wearing a uniform anymore so it will never be ‘we.’ "

Too late
Just head over to www.mccoveychronicles.com, bored nerbs there turned on FP sometime around 2007, admittedly I was/am one of them. If you liked Dibble’s arrogance, than FP’s your guy, although he’s improved on that the last couple of years.

WE!!!!!!
I liked Dibble arrogance. And I like a color man to use we. Does Sonny and Sam use we?
Then you'll love FP!!!!
He may not use “we”, but he is arrogant and condescending as hell on his bad days, but he is smarter than Dibble and knows more about the game as a whole
It's spring, and after working hard this winter, I'm in the best shape of my life.
Ross Detwiler will have a breakout year, believe it.
That's almost different
can you really think of either of them and not think of them as part of the organization?

Just to be clear wasn't trying to insult anyone with the "bored interneters" just talking about us folks the way Dibble often characterized us...
Just wanted to be clear on that point.

I occasionally have to catch myself
and [backspace]-[backspace]-[backspace] the “we” or “our” out of my sentence. It’s easy to claim ownership of or affiliation to one’s sports teams, especially when they are winners. So while I try my darndest not to do it myself, it doesn’t bother me too much when others do.
Rob

very familiar with the [backspace]-[backspace]-[backspace] out of the "we"...
But i catch myself every time. Dibble was proud of it.

I'm happy as a non-semi-professional baseball writer
I can get away with all the "we"s I feel like dropping, though I do try to limit it to casual conversation. Always impressed by the amount of work the pros put into their craft though.
I do the "we" stuff sometimes, but I have started policing myself. Luckily, I'm not a
professional – so if I slip up once in awhile, it’s not a big deal. : )

I like "we" for fans
Ideally, especially given my status as a DC taxpayer who offered breaks to the billionaire Lerners through the stadiums situation, I view the Nats a community trust and it’s okay to say “we”. When I stop saying “we” is when teams move to Landover and lose their minds and all sense of their history.

Oddly enough
I’m totally okay with fans using “we” as long as they don’t take it too far, however, I hate when broadcasters use we and turn in total homers. The most obvious example would be the guys who call the White Sox games. They’re widely regarded as the worst announcers in baseball and use we all the time, along with calling players by their first names etc. Most of what I’ve read usually rank either the Giants or Mets broadcasters as the best in baseball and I’ve never heard any of those guys use we.
It's spring, and after working hard this winter, I'm in the best shape of my life.

I rarely hear out of town TV guys
just radio guys, and there isn’t really a debate on who the best in that area is.
Aim for the head baby Jesus
The thing is,
those guys (TV and radio personnel) travel with the team, eat with the team, stay in the same hotels, etc. etc. They are much much closer to the team than even us rabid fans and in a large part they are a part of the team as a whole. Charlie and Dave are a huge part of the Nationals, IMO. I also believe that Mike Rizzo is part of the Nationals’ team, not just a member of their organization.
Rob

Charlie and Dave have to be considered top tier baseball broadcasters
I think they do their coverage exactly right. They know their team up and down and give the fans a great inside view without going over the top. I don’t ever remember not being entertained or informed while listening.
Wish we could sink the video and radio audio.

per Kilgore
Nine players not on the 40-man roster were spared from at least this round of cuts: Chad Gaudin, Alex Cora, Matt Stairs, Tim Wood, Shairon Martins, Ryan Mattheus, Derek Norris, Laynce Nix and Brian Bixler.
MarkZuckerman: #Nats also released RHP Cla Meredith, who after signing minor-league deal wound up needing Tommy John surgery.
Wow, isn't that kinda cold? The guy has TJ surgery and gets cut by the team.
Best of luck to Cla. Hope his rehab goes well and he gets to pitch again in MLB some day.

I'm assuming that there is some sort of settlement so that his work-related injury is provided for
But sports can be a very cold world indeed.
Will probably only watch that first hour of the game tonight.
There is too much competition in the 7 o’clock hour that is just more compelling the ST baseball, as much as I love the Nats.

I hope baseball soon agrees to allow franchise tags.
It’s like with the NBA, you don’t want all the star players only going to a few teams. If they do go to those teams, the teams that they were on should be rewarded(in a trade after franchising the play) with a fair deal. Getting a late first round pick isn’t nearly good enough.
Skins rule
Not gonna happen in my opinion
That restricts the options for free agents, and I doubt the more powerful players’ union would be down with that.
