Washington Nationals Option Bryce Harper To Class-A Hagerstown + 3 More Roster Moves.
After Bryce Harper was hit by a pitch in his one at bat this afternoon, the Washington Nationals finally announced the inevitable. The 18-year-old phenom had been optioned to Class-A Hagerstown where he'll begin working his way up through the Nats' system at whatever pace his success dictates.
Along with that announcement, the Nats reported that LHP Atahualpa Severino was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse and pitcher RHP Ryan Mattheus and Tim Wood were reassigned to minor league camp.

Go Bally!
Ladson says that Harp didn’t take being reassigned well. It will be fun to watch him make his way up. My bet will be opening day 2012.

Is a september call-up out of question?
um, please visit my soccer (football) blog. it's interesting, I promise. por favor? (filbertway.com)
Sunshine will come to Nats Park, I promise. (visit por favor? my website)
If he hits .800 in A, AA and AAA I’d think he could get a call-up. But that it really not likely.
I think he’ll get a fair shake next year in spring training.
He needs to learn humility and how to be a team player in the bus leagues…and how to play the outfield. He’s sort of new to that.
Just my two cents.
I think its mostly the outfield thing. The first two don’t mean squat, well they might to Riggles, but they don’t in terms of winning.

Don’t really want him to get the Barry Bonds d-bag treatment by the other players. With twice as many games as any other team sport, chemistry does sort of matter.
Yea, but I remember a few Giants teams that had both Barry and Kent both acting like complete assholes all the time, not to mention hating each other that did pretty well. Plus I don’t think Bryce needs that kind of humbling. On a side note, that was one of the things that I always found most disappointing about Barry, that he could act like such a jerk while obviously having such a great sense of the history of the game. I mean he knew from the time he could pick up a bat, even in the rare chance he ended up better than his father, his godfather was still Willie Mays, and nothing he could do could live up to that. Most second generation players have a little more class than Bonds did. (Alomar aside)

except he did live up to that (mays)

Humility / team player
I’ve read nothing but good things about how Bryce has behaved in camp. Have you read something I haven’t?
Yeah, well
to me it’s nuts to send him to Low-A ball, where he will most likely dominate, yet again. How is that going to teach him humility?

I want him to learn how to play OF
Learn when to call and when to yield, how to approach the wall, how to read the bat off the ball and get a good jump, etc.
If he mashes, he’ll move up quickly. I do expect him to be in Harrisburg by August 1.
He can learn to play CF in High-A or AA, too.

(I want him to learn how to hit the nasty breaking stuff)

I'm at the point where I'm with you on this.
I don’t see but so much point in keeping him at Hagerstown more than a couple of weeks, and I think that he’d do fine at Potomac and could probably hang at Harrisburg today.

I absolutely agree. I was actually hoping for a month or two in Potomac, a month or two at AA, and then on to Syracuse, whether he gets a Sept call or not.

Now that's a bit quick
I think the Eastern League will give him problems. Both in the AFL and at the end of his Spring Training games, he’s basically been playing against upper minors guys and even here breaking balls have given him some trouble.
