Wire Taps: Washington Nationals' LF Michael Morse Speaks, San Diego Padres Interested In Alberto Gonzalez?

• Programming Note: Livan Hernandez will be on the hill for the Washington Nationals this afternoon when the Nats take on the St. Louis Cardinals at 1:05 pm EDT in Jupiter, Florida, but he won't be on the air anywhere as it's back to the live box score on MLB Gameday and the MLB At Bat 11 app if you want to follow today's Grapefruit League action live from Roger Dean Stadium. Yesterday it was Justin Verlander and the Tigers, today it's Chris Carpenter and the Cards...

• Nats' Starting Lineup: via @NationalsPR on Twitter: "Lineup at #Cardinals - Morgan 8, Desmond 6, Nix 9, LaRoche 3, Morse 7, Pudge 2, Espi 4, Cora 5, Hernandez 1

• Michael Morse On Starting In Left To Start The Season On MLB Network Radio: "Jim [Riggleman] knows me pretty well since being over in Seattle together and stuff and my big thing especially when I wasn't playing every day, was I told him one time, I said, 'You know, Jim, don't tell me when I'm playing. Or don't tell me when I'm gonna start the night before. Nothing. Because I like to come to the park every day feeling like I'm playing that day, I'm going to be in the lineup. So to me it's kind of the same the feeling, like he really doesn't have to tell me even though I've heard it through the media. He told me the other day I'm going to be playing left, but it's nothing that I'm waiting to hear something...I'm just going to keep playing my game. I'm not going to change anything."

Padres Interested In The General?

Gonzalez to the Padres?

I guess they are short of “A. Gonzalez” players at the moment, having traded one away. I don’t think that the General can fill those shoes, though!

They may be waiting to see if the Nationals cut the General, though – which I think would be a mistake by the Nationals. He’s almost the epitome of the 25th man on a MLB roster – slick fielding late inning defensive replacement/pinch runner type. He certainly gives you more of an option than Stairs.

No matter how CF plays out the Nationals will have at least one lefty bat on the bench already, possibly two (whoever isn’t playing CF from the Bernadina/Ankiel/Morgan group). I have a hard time seeing the need for Stairs given the glut of limited lefty OF the team already has.

Yeah, I'm really not in the Stairs camp

His pinch hitting exploits during the spring may delude some of the fans and the RiZzO though.

But you know better than Rizzo and the deluded fans?

Vivian Jaffe: "Have you ever transcended space and time?"
Albert Markovski: "Yes. No. Uh, time, not space... No, I don't know what you're talking about."

I don't think the picture is as gloomy as he's painting it...

Our rotation IS weak, but we’ve all known since Stras went down that we’re lacking a #1 starter, but I don’t think he’s crediting enough our improvements in our bench and infield. I still think we’re probably looking at a 10 game improvement, maybe better if our pitching comes together. I can’t wait for the 31st!

Neither does Bos

At least, he won’t if the Nationals run off a few wins. Then he’ll be back to the “something amazing is happening here!” vibe. Then when they lose a few, it will be back to the doom & gloom. Bos is completely unencumbered by long-term memory.

Wait for the Werth signing to wear off

I’m trying to figure the over/under until Bos abandons the growth from within and revives his “got to sign free agents” theme.

go, Bally, go

go, Livo, also
they are giving each of the contenders for center field and bench every opportunity to jump ahead and take a job
the pitching concerns me but I keep repeating: it’s only spring training, it’s only….
fantasy draft tomorrow, a sure sign opening day is near

In case you're not a Twitter person...

Bryce Harper reportedly injured his ankle this morning, had to be/was carted off field. No word from Nats, just a few writers down there reporting on what they saw at this point.

Albert Markovski: "Yes. No. Uh, time, not space... No, I don't know what you're talking about."

@masnBen: Nationals announce Bryce Harper sprained his left ankle during a morning scrimmage, and is day-to-day.

The new home uniforms have grown on me a bit. At first I was ticked, but now I figure they’re at least better than the old ones. Sort of a classic look to them.

Who’s going to NatsFest next week?

by RoscoeNats on Mar 21, 2011 12:24 PM EDT reply actions

Depends on my workload

I’m already taking Thursday and Friday off, so that makes it tough. On the plus side, I work within walking distance of the ballpark, so if things go the right way I can always pop over for a bit.

I'm unlikely for it.

Trying to be more productive with my projects as is. I’m trying to save my powder for actual games.

New ST home

My cousin who works for the Red Sox told me that the Nationals have been looking into taking over City of Palms Park in Ft. Myers. The Sox are moving to a new stadium next year and Ft. Myers is desperately trying to get a new tenant.

Livo bounces into double play.

Tee Time for the win! Can’t be having these rallies getting in the way of his golf game.
