Chien-Ming Wang and the long road back
Hello, FB. I would like to introduce myself. I am Branta, a Yankee fan. Thus it might be a little unusual for me to be posting here at all, being a blog about the Nationals and all. As Abraham said, "I am a stranger in a strange land." However, Chien-Ming Wang, current Nationals pitcher and project, was once the Yankees ace, so I was interested in his progress back from injury. I would like to see him make his way back to the big leagues soon and see him succeed. I happen to be down in Woodbridge, VA this weekend for the 4th of July holiday to visit my brother and his fiancee. As luck would have it, Wang was making what I believe to be his second rehab start (I could be mistaken) for the P-Nats. I'm no baseball scout, but I thought you might want a first hand account of the evening.
Wang's first batter set an ominous tone for the day, working a favorable count, fouling off some pitches, and then lofting a ball that thankfully was caught out before the warning track. The next two outs of the inning, however, were recorded on the next two pitches. The strong Taiwanese (not sure if that's the proper term) turnout were very happy to see this.
For the next two innings, Wang did not pitch with a favorable count once, falling behind early. His first walk was erased by a double play thanks to a tremendous effort by Francisco Soriano at short, diving to save a base hit. He then walked another batter, but was able to get out of the inning with a shallow fly ball to center.
In the bottom of the third, the P-Nats got Wang a 2-0 lead. When he came back to the mound, his confidence finally seemed to come with him, and he turned in his best inning. The 4th wound up being his last.
His final line for the night was 4.0 IP, 1 hit, 2 BB, 2 K, 0 ER.

Thanks!
Three baserunners in four innings isn’t too bad for a first go. Hopefully his control will improve quickly now that he is pitching real games.
By now, it seems weird to even expect to see him this year, but if he can come back strong I’m looking forward to it.
Thanks for the report, Branta.

He was also throwing in the bullpen after he was taken out.
And Solis has been called up to Potomac, or at least was in uniform for the game last night, no offical move has been reported
Meanwhile, down in purgatory
Bryce Harper’s stats for the last couple of days: 3 for 7, a double, two runs scored, 3 walks, 1 strikeout, and 5 (!) stolen bases.
Why exactly is he still in low A…?

Gotta master the level.
It’s more than hitting, you know. How’s his “railbird” pose? At this level, you have to be able to lean against the dugout railing like you mean it without seeming to mean it, and still be able to dodge foul balls effectively.

How did his stuff look? Was he getting a lot of grounders?
That was his hallmark with the Yankees, a heavy low-90’s sinker
Reports had his sinker topping out at 91-92
He’s obviously not being called up soon; four innings was actually pretty good for a first “live” start. Let’s see how he pitches the next couple of times, and then against better opposition.
The thing also to remember is Wang in NY was a ground-ball pitcher with a below average middle infield. (Jeter didn’t deserve the defensive accolades, and Cano was a butcher at second when he first came up).
One can hope, but no expect.

I hope he makes his way back and becomes a solid MLB pitcher again
The Nats can always use more quality pitching. The rotation has been better than expected this year, but there is also some inconsistency. The announcers mentioned that Jordan Zimmermann is on a strict innings count this year, so he probably won’t be available after mid-August.
If CMW is ready, he could take over at Zimmermann’s spot for the rest of the year.

Thanks for the report.
Most of us are really hoping CMW will get a call up sometime this season…and be good.
I was really bummed to find out Harper was not in Woodbridge.
Syracuse is only 8 hours away, I guess (thinking ahead).
