Wire Taps: Washington Nationals - 2011 MLB Draft Signing Deadline Thread.

Last year General Manger Mike Rizzo (left) and Scott Boras (right) negotiated a deal for no.1 overall pick Bryce Harper. This year they're talking about the top three picks. (Photo by Greg Fiume/Getty Images)

• If you haven't been paying attention to what's going on with the Washington Nationals' unsigned 2011 Draft picks there's still time to catch up before tonight's 11:59:59 signing deadline. You'll notice however that there hasn't been much new news since June. Nats' GM Mike Rizzo's spoken often about the Nationals doing what they can to get all their picks signed, but the way things work at this point with everyone holding out until the the last possible moment before the deadline, there has been little in the way of new information about any of Washington's selections.

What news there has been has focused on 3rd Round pick Matt Purke, who was originally supposed to play in the Cape Cod League so the Nats could get a good read of his health, but decided to work out near his home in Texas instead. The Nationals had Purke to Nats Park for a game before the All-Star Break, he's taken a physical, the Nats were comfortable with what they saw, and according to Washington Post writer Adam Kilgore, Nats' GM Mike Rizzo was in Houston, Texas this weekend, "... in negotiations with Peter Vescovo the representative for Nationals' third-round draft choice Matt Purke." Outside of that it's just rumors, and there honestly aren't even many of them coming out of the Nats' leakproof front office, but the latest, from Baseball Prospectus and ESPN writer Kevin Goldstein (on the Twitter @Kevin_Goldstein) is that there are, "More and more RUMORS out there that the #Nationals will get [Anthony] Rendon, [Alex] Meyer AND Purke done; rumor No. 2 is big league deal for Purke."

• Catch up on reading for now and bring all your rumors, tweets, predictions and comments to the discussion below. We'll be here until midnight...and later most likely...

But I need my beauty sleep tonight so I will not be staying up.

Nah, I dont want to dump Harrisburg

stadium is supposed to be one of the best in the minors. The diamond is big enough for AAA, and it used to be the Braves AAA team. Im not shure how it works but I think we get the Squirrels people, and the Chiefs people stay with whoever takes over Syracuse. I only had one complaint with the actualy people in Richmond when I went, and that had to do with the Harper circus, so I cant blame them to much. That trip down sucked, drive 3 hours total to see no baseball.

I wonder why ESPN et al hasn’t spent the last three weeks obsessing about that milestone chase, like, say, their constant blathering on about Jeter’s quest for 3000, becoming the 25th such player?

Actually, I don’t wonder about that at all.

Hey Carlos Zambrano looks like he's available this summer.
Carlos Zambrano provided the drama for the Cubs on Friday, allowing five home runs to the Braves, earning an ejection, and then clearing out his locker and telling the team trainer he was retiring. The next day the Cubs announced they placed Zambrano on the disqualified list, meaning 30 days without pay, which would save the team over $1.6MM. The players union will file a grievance, of course. You have to think the Cubs will unload Zambrano at any cost this winter.

These deals don’t change how long a player is under team control, but they can’t cut their salary by more than 20% a year until free agency. If all goes well, this won’t matter :)

I see.

So a 4 year deal for Purke would mean he becomes a free agent in 2016? Or is it vastly more complicated?

by Joey Fox on Aug 16, 2011 12:34 AM EDT up reply actions

no, he’ll still be under team control, but he can’t be paid less that say $1 million in 2016 even if he stinks (number a guesstimation)

Combined slot recommendation for Rendon, Meyer, Goodwin & Purke was ~$5M; #Nationals paid $16.6M (two MLB deals)

Big league deal, $7.2M for Rendon...

Vivian Jaffe: "Have you ever transcended space and time?"
Albert Markovski: "Yes. No. Uh, time, not space... No, I don't know what you're talking about."

On the WaPo site,

professional troll PMcP loudly predicted today that the Nats would not sign any of their top 5 guys. I guess we won’t have to deal with him any time soon.
