Game 143: FAILtastic FAIL parade of FAIL
Tonight's game story: FAIL.
- Making Maya look good: John Lannan (-35.6%) only lasts 2.1 innings, giving up 4 ER plus another 2 unearned on his own throwing error.
- Not bobble-worthy: Danny Espinosa (-7.3%) continues his crushing slump, going 0-4 with 3 Ks and 5 LOB.
- Lombo, call your agent: Ian Desmond (-5.5%) isn't much better, going 0-5 with 3 LOB.
- Present, but irrelevant: The offense comes up with 9 hits and has 5 batters with positive WPA, but it's hard to move the needle when you're already down by 6 in the 3rd.

I've stuck through this team through some bad times.
Seeing this season go down the toilet like it has has me thinking I may just go to Baysox games next year. I can’t stand the thought of watching a team managed by Davey Johnson for an entire season. My heart goes cold when I think of the team unloading Morse for prospects next trade deadline like the Astros did with Pence. With every regular striking out at least a hundred times, it won’t matter if there are five Strasburgs in the rotation. Since things were looking up halfway through the season, I probably feel worse about the team now than at any other time. Someone tell me I’m being too pessimistic. Please.
Strasburg pitches tomorrow.
That will help for at least 5 innings, I hope.

What makes you think they would trade Morse?
They have NEVER done anything that makes me think that is even a possibility.
Aim for the head baby Jesus
Also what is your issue with strikeouts, you mention it every single post.
Strikeouts aren’t really worse than other kinds of outs. Somebody needs to take you to a few services at the church of the THREE TRUE OUTCOMES.
Aim for the head baby Jesus
You're mostly right,
unless they’re failing to move a runner over. Thanks for calling me out on mentioning strikeouts in every post. I hate it when other people sound like broken records. And I don’t really think they’d trade Morse. I was thinking about the Astros fire sale, and how that would be a worst case scenario.
I’m still a little concerned about Espinosa. Hopefully he’s be able to adjust to the adjustments. I have doubts about Johnson being a good fit for this team, but if he stays I hope I’m wrong. It doesn’t help that most of the starting lineup is hitting under .250. I had just hoped we’d be able to play better against poor/mediocre teams, especially after hanging tough against the Phillies the past three series. Anyway, thanks for the wakeup call.
Stomp, I was at Popfly Popcorn
for most of the top of the 3rd (and what an inning I picked!) I waited while a new batch popped and the Astros’ bats popped one hit after another and Lannan mad like Eddie Cicotte in Eight Men Out. I hoped you’d drop by but I guess you were with your family and portability was thus an issue. My daughter & I were sitting in 204.
Anyway re Espi: I too hope he’ll have the ability to adjust, and I think he will. I know I willl cherish his bobblehad for the rest of my life – just hope it appreciates in value, unlike the Dmitri Young and Nyjer Morgan models!

Forgot to add
in the “Re Espi” Department: remember, a little while ago some Nats faithful (myself included) were getting ready to write off Desmond – now he’s coming around offensively.

Was at the park tonight...
Outraged.
Maybe some productive comments tomorrow, but right now I just want to scream.
If severing hadn't pitched
I would ge going on one of my rants right now, so you can thank severino for that. I really want severino to get a fighting chance in the spring to beat out Doug slaten. Severino is also the second guy from our Dominican academy to make the majors, Michael Martinez is the other, let me just end this with a GO NATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've got to say.............
I’m glad to see these three posts…………I am speechless to how angry I have been for 2-3 weeks…………..
First thing to do is move Morse back to first.
And
I guess Marrerro should have been playing LF his last 4-5 weeks in AAA.
Why, when Ankiel starts is Jason in CF???
Like I said My thoughts are of ramblings at this point………
It really looks like Morse is a defensive liability in left.
Don’t remember him looking that bad in right last year. I know hindsight is 20/20, but I wish they had just made Morse the 1st baseman and kept Willingham. There were plenty of relievers available who could have been better than Henry (we could have kept Peralta, for instance). At least we didn’t trade for Span or Upton. We would have either had a player who was finished for the season or another low average hitter. It’s one thing to see what we have as far as new players, it’s another to misuse known quantities. Maybe we’ll luck out and Rizzo will go to the Cubs.
Morse in RF in 2010 – 510 innings – -18.6 UZR/150
Morse in LF in 2011 – 294 innings – - 20.4 UZR/150
Morse at 1B in 2011 – 723 innings – - .8.8 UZR/150
That said, Morse has played very little left field before this year. It’s something that has to be learned, and he’s not doing worse than he was in right. He may improve, a little.
Morse does have very limited experience in left,
which is precisely why you should not use UZR for him. So I implore you, gentle reader: ignore these numbers. They are as meaningless as the ones on the back of your fortune cookie!

He's having a pretty good year in Oaktown
and not exclusively at DH. If he’d played left this year, with Morse at first, would not the offensive boost have more than made up for JW’s periodic miscues in the outfield?

Hammer actually made a really good play in LF
yesterday …highlight-reel worthy even. He’s much appreciated out here.
I’m happy he’s having a good season. The Nats sure could use his 25 or 26 homeruns plus a bunch of RBIs this year!

The problem with Hammer for the Nationals had little to do with his fielding, IMHO
It was with the fact that he can’t stay healthy on an NL team, that he’s a free agent after this season, and that he plays a position that was earmarked for Harper. So Rizzo wanted to get what he could for him.
Interestingly, if Werth can hold CF for a couple of years while Perez or Komatsu (or even Brown, although I ain’t betting on that) develops, then you have Morse-Werth-Harper in the OF from LF to RF. If Harper sustains his pace, that could be pretty special.
This is my problem:
He got hurt a couple of times and that became “he can’t stay healthy on an NL team”. It’s a pretty remarkable (as in highly debatable) conclusion, but it’s one that’s made all too often, IMO.

Well, it's hard to call SSS when the sample size is his career
I remember doing a post earlier this year on Willingham and his career pattern – we had a back & forth on it, IIRC. Perhaps I should’ve said “hasn’t been able to stay healthy on an NL team.” He also missed about 30 games this year to injury notwithstanding that he’s also played 30 games at DH. Nick Johnson he’s not, but he’s not exactly Cal Ripken Jr. either.
Even putting that aside, Hammer still ran into the “free agent” and “no future” problems in terms of the Nationals committing to him longer term.
I am certain now
and was certain then, that the Nats would be better off making him trade-bait for this season or at worst getting a Type-B compensation for losing him after the year. But then again, I also thought that Morse would have been a better choice at first than any of the available first-basemen on the free agent market, much less the schmoe they ended up signing. So, in the end, it all comes down to LaRoche ruining it for everybody. ;-)

Rizzo going to the Cubs could destroy this team
if you look at the farm system, there are guys top to bottom who are legit prospects, when Bowden was the GM, we had about zero legit prospects. You cant build a team in one year unless you get crazy lucky. If you look, even the guys who are ranked in the 30’s on prospect rankings have the potential to help the big team as soon as next year. I think the only question with Rizzo is can he put togehter a winning roster, when he gets the tools to do it. I do like that Davey is trying to learn from his mistakes.
LET SEVERINO PITCH!
I love the reality checks I'm getting.
Obviously seeing last night’s carnage live was a traumatic experience. Yeah, even if there are some busts in there (which seems to be the case with any team), there are several players who can help sooner rather than later.
Perhaps I should commit to balancing every negative comment with a positive one. Maybe even make more positive ones from here on out, since I’ve been way too negative the past couple of weeks. I wasn’t serious about only going to Baysox games, by the way. As long as tickets stay as cheap as they are a much better bargain than going to the movies. Now to start dreaming of spending my 50th birthday on 10/20/2014 at the NLCS.
I understand
I was at the park for the Cubs disaster(I still refuse to call that a game), that was a horrible thing to watch, and man was I PO’d after.
Now to show my poing, here is a top 30 list from a fanpost at Stickles site. I put the year I think they could make the majors if all goes as good as it can next to each player. Just to warn you , all these are very optimistic

I warned you that im over hopeful
some will flame out, some will take longer than I hope.
LET SEVERINO PITCH!
Maybe Severino can be the lefty specialist Slaten isn't.
For some reason I didn’t realize he threw in the mid nineties. Maybe it’s because he never got into a game with the big (I hesitate to use that term at this point) club until this week.
