I REALLY REALLY want there to be a Strasburg vs. Chapman matchup in that first series at home.
Aim for the head baby Jesus
So Strasburg can get a free win?
I’d rather he play an Ace so he could get a tough win, and he can leave the free wins to our 4 & 5 starters.

Just wondering what team it is you've been watching, oh, these past six years or so
Have we ever had any “free wins”? Don’t we have a particular knack of making bad pitchers look good, and good pitchers look great?
I would enjoy watching the matchup.
If you don't eat your meat, you can't have any pudding! How can you have any pudding if you don't eat your meat?!
Chapman's stuff is for real,
I don’t know how he will make the transition to starter, but I think he will do it. His control has been much better since his stint in the minors. But I’m sure the Nats could match up Strasburg against Cueto instead.
Aim for the head baby Jesus
One thing though:
Zimmermann is the staff ace next year.

Total agreement
+2
I want to see JZIMM opening day.
Plus the is going to have to either lift STRAS inning count to 180 or sit him during the mid-season………..I want to see this team pressing for the wild card until at least mid Sept.
Stras will probably pitch almost the exact same schedule next season the JZimm did this season.
why mess with success.
Aim for the head baby Jesus
Playoffs...........
JZIMM was shut down two weeks ago…………I expect this team to be pressing for the wild card next season………
That means STRAS pitches until at least September 20th. 2012. Thats 20 more innings alone. Plus JZIMM is much more pitch efficient.
160 is’nt going to cut it…………Hell JZIMM should have pitched 175 this season.
They won't do it.
In fact, from what I understand Stras will be even MORE limited than JZ was this year.
Rob
-- In baseball we trust.
Won't Do what? Go to the playoffs..........
Continuing to be a candi organization equals no playoffs.
There is no way his limit will be less then 160. But the point is, if its 160 and he is less efficient then JZIMM and he is………..When does he NOT pitch?………..JULY?
While I don't necessarily trust the Nats' medical staff
I do trust the surgeon. Also, I’d rather err on the side of shutting them down early than have Davey/whomever’s managing in 2012 pull a Dusty Baker and turn Zimmermann and Strasburg into Prior and Wood.
Brain: "Pinky, are you pondering what i'm pondering?"
Pinky: "Yes, ... wait, ... no, ... never mind"
Excepting, of course,
the situation where the M’s trade Felix Hernandez. He can be the staff ace next year if he wants to be.

A Tip O' the Cap to Mariano Rivera on his 600th Save Last Night
And a shudder as I picked something up from the game recap saluting Mo on Pinstripe Alley. From a New York Times article from 1995, the following:
Jim Bowden, the Reds’ general manager, declined to discuss the Yankees’ involvement, but an official familiar with the Wells talks said Steinbrenner called Bowden Saturday night and offered pitcher Mariano Rivera and catcher Jorge Posada.
Bowden, looking to cut his payroll, obviously decided he preferred Goodwin, a 23-year-old left-handed hitter, who in 87 games with the Orioles last season batted .263 and had 22 stolen bases in 26 attempts.
Yes, George offered a classic Boss move (a la Jay Buhner for Ken Phelps), but Bowden was too Bowden to actually take it! A collective shudder for me on behalf of both of my favorite teams.
STEINBRENNER!!!!!!
BOWDEN!!!!!!!
Correction
“A collective shudder for me on behalf of both of my my second- and third-favorite teams.”
I mean, right?
If you don't eat your meat, you can't have any pudding! How can you have any pudding if you don't eat your meat?!
Wahr?
The shudder is for my favorite teams, the Yankees and the Nationals. Unless you’re making a joke I’m too slow to catch. Which is possible – it’s been a stressful week.
Thought you were suggesting your favorite two teams were Yankees and REDS.
Understand now the shudder is for Nationals under BOWDEN.
If you don't eat your meat, you can't have any pudding! How can you have any pudding if you don't eat your meat?!
Heh...well played, sir!

Sox/Yanks
I’ll be at Fenway for the Saturday June 9th game, getting my Nats jersey on TV behind the Red Sox dugout. Just set it up with fam who are perennial season ticket holders. Pumped!
And I’m buying Yanks tix for the following week ASAP. That means one less ticket for their fans inevitable Nats Park takeover.
Hope it's a Zimmerman jersey
And that they get at least one shot of the back.
(Zimmy needs the advertisement; Strasburg, for example, not so much).
If you don't eat your meat, you can't have any pudding! How can you have any pudding if you don't eat your meat?!
I should up the ante
And go with the Coffey jersey.
As I said earlier on twitter,
one of the best things about next season will be the Phillies being out of contention the last week of the season when they come to DC.

WHAT?!? Lee, Halliday, Hamels and Worley will STILL be there.,,
And while there are some aging players on the team, the Phillies seem VERY willing to spend big to shore up any weak spots.
I don’t expect them to drop out for at least a few more years…a possibly longer if they keep spending big.
I wish it weren’t so.

come on, MissB
Can’t you let a guy dream? :-)
If you don't eat your meat, you can't have any pudding! How can you have any pudding if you don't eat your meat?!
Lee is old, I see him falling off,
I see Atlanta passing them by next season.
Aim for the head baby Jesus
I also think their offense is going to continue to get worse
Lets not forget that Ryan Howard and Adam Dunn are the same age.
Aim for the head baby Jesus
Yeah, well I don't think it's wise to use Adam Dunn as a prototypical example of the aging process
Dunn is an extreme outlier. Howard may continue to decline, but even declined he’s still a pretty good hitter. Will the Phils be as good next year? Not without some significant improvements. But Brown and resigning Pence should help to keep the team more or less stable.
Rob
-- In baseball we trust.
Dunn was better than Howard last season
and Howard has been declining for a few years now, I don’t think it’s that unlikely that he just loses it. The guy has always been a strikeout machine and in several seasons he has been a liability against lefties, it only takes a small decline in bat speed to make him a below average 1b. Rollins is also getting up there, I’m not sold on Brown, and resigning Pence will take a boatload of cash. They may act like it now, but the Phillies are not the Yankees, at some point if they keep spending they will start losing money.
Aim for the head baby Jesus
Except that Dunn's crash is really unprecedented
Fangraphs has done a couple of articles on it (I’m too pressed for time to look them up) but the Dunn-key has blazed a trail on this. To just blithely assume that Howard “just loses it” is also a reach.
According to Baseball Reference, Hunter Pence is not a free agent until after 2013; he’s arbitration eligible after this season. Do you really think the Phillies aren’t going to offer him arbitration? He’s still going to be relatively affordable for a couple of years.
If you figure that losing Oswalt (news flash: he hasn’t pitched all that much, or that well, for them this year so they haven’t been relying on him) plus the slow decline of their aging players knocks 10 games off of the Phillies next year … they are still winning 95 or 96 games. That’s not likely to be “out of contention.”
Corey Brown's knee
There is no operation to “remove” a staph infection.
I speak from experience, having had the same procedure done twice to me knee.
The procedure is called a “debridement” and basically involves a wound or infected area being opened up and an attempt is made to scrape or cut away the infected tissue. It’s nasty. I went in for out patient surgery for a torn patella tendon, but due to an infection I picked up in the operating room I didn’t leave the hospital for close to a month and almost lost my leg. That ended my playing days, such as they were, 20 years ago this year.
Davey was right about one thing, it ain’t nothing to play around with.
there are a variety of debridement procedures these days, with varying levels of invasiveness
which could include complete removal of the infected tissue. its a little unusual to me that they would opt to do so for a young man who you’d think was in good health and would probably tolerate parenteral antibiotics well. if it were me and it was the ned of the season anyway, i’d probably prefer a picc line over getting a chunk of my knee removed. Unless of course they’ve been trying medication for some time but still another operation raises the risk of the hospital acquired cycle continuing

Stupid phone! Brown's knee infection rings alarm bells for me.
Those are notoriously hard to get rid of. I hope the kid recovers completely. He’s had a tough year of nagging injuries.

Hey at least it isn't inside the bone.
My sister had one that was, she was 2 weeks in intensive care, two weeks in a normal room, followed by around a month of IV anti-biotics at home. They drilled holes in her hips bone, and then sucked the infection out.

BTW, theres a link to a CSN story on the right titled "Small ball pushes Nats past Mets"
the record from monday reflects one sacrifice bunt by the pitcher, no other bunts, no sac flies, no steal attempts, 11 total bases. Smart ball maybe, small ball no
