Game 148: Swept into 3rd place!
- Coming along nicely: Tommy Milone (+29.5%) goes 5.2 IP with 1 ER on 4 Ks and 3 BBs.
- Not helping: Collin Balester (-9.3%) cashes in a runner he inherited from Milone.
- He fields pretty well, too: Rick Ankiel (+20.6%) is 1-2 with a walk and a big reached-on-error, which scored a run to break a scoreless tie in the 5th and put runners 2nd/3rd (+15.1%).
- Putting out the fire: Todd Coffey (+13.0%) gets a fly out to defuse a bases-loaded jam after Henry Rodriguez (-5.9%) walks 3 and can't get the last out in the 7th.
- Thriving with competition? Ian Desmond (+17.1%) is 5-6 with 3 RBIs.

I had the article mostly written for the last two innings...
…except the title. I find that putting the title in before the game ends is a tad… jinxy.

Yeah....have to wait for the actual outcome.
That’s why I’m sometimes late on the strikeout icons…I won’t even think about them until it happens…no pre-pasting, no preparing the comment in advance.
I try to heed the Jinx Overlords and stay in their favor.

I hate waiting..
every time Charlie starts getting excited about a deep fly I’m already jamming out the exclamation marks that go after the HR :)
I get a lot of Shift-Home-Delete action..
Hey Doghouse, I just noticed your tag line!
I’m honored, but in spirit of full disclosure, I have to admit that the line was lifted from a Loudon Wainwright lll song, “Bell Bottom Pants”, which is on his 1973 LP “Attempted Mustache”.
Also, in the spirit of full disclosure, I’m proud to say that I’ve never owned a pair of bell bottom pants!
The credit is for applying the quote in an appropriately awesome context.

We got 10 runs
With Morse going oh-fer. Crazy!
Desi was monstrous today, too. 3rd place here we come.

Third place, here we are! Now, we just have to hold it! “IF” we can break the Marlins jinx, we have a good shot at it. The Mets have a much tougher remaining schedule, as do the Marlins…..but we HAVE to take care of business against Florida. 75 Wins is also becoming more and more of a possibility…..my prediction was 75, with a possibility of .500 if the chips fell in our favor. Considering all the injuries during the first half, I’d say the chips didn’t fall our way.

Title Should Have Been......
“Dez’d Into Third Place!” Ian Desmond is the spotlight of this game, and arguably, the series. Way to go IAN!

You can't pin him down.
NatsNewsNetwork:
Of course the day I write an analytical piece about Ian Desmond he goes 5-for-6 with three RBIs. #Nats
especially when I suspect Gloomy Dave was being gloomy about Ian (without reading a single word, yet…)

not being gloomy
but he was certainly questioning whether Ian can sustain the production of the past month and a half.
Keep Questioning, Dave!!!!

Dave does some really great work, and I enjoy the majority of his stuff, but he is a little too negative about those he does not necessarily like, and little biased towards those he favors. I’d like his commentary alot more, if he were a little more objective, and a little less subjective.

I don’t think this is the case at all, Dave really likes Ian Desmond, he just thinks he should take more pitches and shorten his swing more often.

Morse is struggling
At this rate he won’t be hitting over .300 much longer. Wasn’t that long ago he was 3rd in the NL at around .320.
Winning Record......
Against the Mets. If we sweep the Marlins, Braves and Phillies in our remaining games, we will have a winning record against ALL NL East opponents!

Somehow I'm not betting the mortgage on that one
Still I am hopeful that my 3rd place prediction will hold true.

No, it really was meltdown
It was monumentally bad. No excuses, he’s too much of a disaster risk.

Your point stands, but...
…the meltdown is technically -6.0% WPA or worse, so Hot Rod officiallly had a “meh” outing, no how matter how many ulcers he aggravated in NatsTown.

It's like saying "Player X's numbers since 3pm August 29th..."
Brain: "Pinky, are you pondering what i'm pondering?"
Pinky: "Yes, ... wait, ... no, ... never mind"
Not quite..
…the folks who came up with Meltdown/Shutdown tried to scale a SD to match the average WPA from a hold (as I recall—+6%), and made the MD the inverse.
