Game 149: Back to FAIL
Tonight's game story: Nats lose, are terrible.
- FAIL pitching: John Lannan (-10.5%)
almosthas a QS, lasting56 innings, walking 3, striking out 1, and giving up an insurmountable 3 ER. - FAIL baserunning: Brian Bixler (-4.8%) blows his PR appearance by getting picked off to end a 7th-inning rally attempt, while Danny Espinosa (-9.1%) is out by a mile trying to stretch a single (-1.6%).
- FAIL hitting: Outside of Laynce Nix (+4.9%) and his 7th-inning single to put runners 1st/2nd (+8.3%), Nationals hitters are terrible to the tune of -48.3% WPA.

"...and the Nats win four in a row in NY." by Patrick Reddington on Sep 15, 2011
Just got home from the game a few minutes ago.
What’s gotten in to Javier Vazquez since the break? He’s looked like a Cy Young contender, and not just against the Nats. Tonight’s game had its share of boneheaded baserunning plays on both sides. If Lannan had stayed in the strike zone a little better we might still be sitting there. Too bad Ankiel and Espinosa swung for the fences with two men on base. Ankiel is probably never going to be any different, but Danny’s young and may learn to shorten up his swing when the situation calls for it. Was glad to see Lannan keep it at 3. They pitched well enough, but the hitting reminded me of the Mets the last 4 nights. Looks like they’re taking it out of the Braves tonight. Speaking of the Braves, maybe the Nats should tell themselves that’s who they’re playing instead of the Marlins. Time to break the curse of the bill fish tomorrow.
just watched the highlights and was very happy that the Nats played heads up baseball to take advantage of the errant Fish baserunners
too bad no bats to go with gloves….

Lannan DID have a "quality start"!
did you write that when Morse came on deck in bottom 5 and then not go back?
Jayson Werth Triple Slash Watch: .232/.332/.392

THAT was not a quality start by Lannan last night. 11 baserunners in six innings? Blech. It was “make your eyes bleed” Lannan last night, constantly behind in the count. It was awful to listen to on the radio, I’m glad my eyes didn’t have to go through that in person.
Yeah! There was no "quality" in that Lannan outing last night.
I myself would rather have another Livo start than more of this version of Lannan (last 2 starts have been U G L Y).
At least Livo can bunt and sometimes hit…and who doesn’t love those wonderful S L O W pitches!

+1
while it passes the MLB test (minimum 6 innings pitched, maximum 3 runs), it fails the sanity test. I’ve never understood how the equivalent to a 4.5 ERA is considered ‘quality’. Believe me, it didn’t look any better on TV.
BTW, I’d have put the first FAIL as "John Lannan almost has a (airquotes) Quality Start (end airquotes) … "

Pinky: "Yes, ... wait, ... no, ... never mind"
I say it's time to bust out the Smurf-wear again!
Seems it has only a 4-game benefit per wearing.
So c’mon, clubhouse…paint those bodies blue, don those white hats and tragic white tights… and slip on the white crocs for a new hit of Smurfy Goodness!

Lannan was actively pitching his way out of next year's rotation last night
Last few outings, really.
