Washington Nationals' Livan Hernandez To Start Sunday, Then Become Coach/Mentor For Remainder Of '11.
MLB.com's Bill Ladson just reported on the Twitter that Stephen Strasburg will replace Livan Hernandez in the Washington Nationals' rotation after the veteran right-hander's last start of the season on Sunday against the New York Mets.
@washingnats: "#Nats RHP Livan Hernandez will start his last game of the season on Sunday. Livo will become a mentor/coach the rest of the way.
@washingnats: "#Nats RHP Livan Hernandez will not pitch out of the bulllpen the rest of the year. He will do some pinch hitting."
Earlier this week, Hernandez told reporters he'd spoken to the Nats about returning in a bullpen role next season. No word from the Nats on whether they'll bring the 36-year-old right-hander back.

Why remove him?
At this point, what is to be gained? They don’t need the roster space for anyone in particular, especially with many of the minor leaguers involved in playoff series. They already use Livan as a pinch bunter, and that would continue. With the roster expansion they shouldn’t need him as a PH
not needed until the off-season?
in which case he’s a free agent and doesn’t count against the roster anyway
Brain: "Pinky, are you pondering what i'm pondering?"
Pinky: "Yes, but isn't a cucumber that small called a gherkin?"
OK, so I was off by one start
but thought he wasn’t long for the rotation when he made his last start.
WISH I COULD BE THERE on Sunday – Alas, am back in China and will simply have to follow it through FBb. GO LIVO – TRUE NAT (TRUE DAT!).
If you don't eat your meat, you can't have any pudding! How can you have any pudding if you don't eat your meat?!
I'd like to see Livan back next year as a long reliever
He could be effective in that role. He would also be available to mentor the young guys on the staff. The rotation could be very young in 2012: Strasburg, Zimmermann, Lannan, Detwiler or Peacock, maybe Wang. Wang hasn’t been around the team for that long. Plus he isn’t nearly as experienced as Livan is. CMW may not even be here next year.
Balester isn’t getting much work in the role. Either give him more opportunities to pitch regularly in the minors, or trade him. Unless he’s going to be slotted as a reliever for the long-term.

"Save it. I'm goin' for a smoothie."
The Washington Nationals, the team of the 2010s!
P.S. Wang'll never be a mentor until he learns English well enough to communicate readily with his teammates.
