C'mon John, do you really wanna give it away that badly?

He may be pitching himself out of next year’s rotation. He’s been consistently mediocre. I’d love it if he became expendable; his control seems to disappear a lot, and he’s not a guy who can afford to walk people.

the Nats may have five (or more?) other starters who get better results.

I think JL will be in the rotation at the beginning of the season. Not sure how long he’ll stay in.

by Elvin Unseld on Sep 27, 2011 8:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Every team needs more than five starting pitchers.

Spot starters and such. I’m betting that’ll be Detwiler’s job, but they could easily swap.

True, buuuuut...

Nobody (except the Chisox and Ozzie Guillen, for a while) uses a 6-man rotation. I think clause the last of your post will come true – RD in the rotation, Lannan to the pen… or elsewhere.

Hey all - what say Lannan get another out?

FP was saying what a nice play Lannan made when Bonifacio scored. My reaction was “not such a nice play when he threw the ball over Ramos!!”

And he’s hanging a lot of curve balls … but gets the swinging strikeout to escape first-and-third. ARGH.

Yeah, call me a sentimentalist (or much worse...heh)...

but I’m ok with Javy getting his last W; but not ok with the L to the Marlins.
Strange, huh?

Last one for us, I hope.

Unfortunately, it wouldn’t surprise me that much to see him tomorrow. Hopefully if I do it will be with a double digit lead.

What's Slaten got on Davey?

I guess really believes that wins don’t matter if you don’t make the playoffs. The guy failed before he went on the DL, he’s failed after he got off. I’m resigned to Davey being back next year, and the last couple weeks have been a great ride, but this is another of his moves that has me scratching my head. And not just because it itches.

by mstomper on Sep 27, 2011 9:46 PM EDT reply actions

I'm MOST worried about what Davey said about Henry Rodriguez...

that he could run Henry out 4 or 5 times cause he’s a horse.
AGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
Two times in a row: Ok
Three times in a row: Dicey
Four times in a row: STUPID beyond belief.

A while back

I thought DJ was taking a garbage time approach to September, but then he began combining managing -to-win with late-season talent assessment. I wanted DJ’s head after the Strasburg Returns(!) Game, but IMHO he’s done a lot better since then.

Slaten notwithstanding…

by Elvin Unseld on Sep 27, 2011 9:50 PM EDT up reply actions

My big beef with Johnson is how he's used the bullpen.

Maybe next year there won’t be enough weak links for misusing the bullpen to be as costly. I hadn’t seen his statement about running Henry out there 4 or 5 games in a row. When that happens he not only has a harder time throwing strikes but his velocity also decreases. He becomes Daniel Cabrera. If he works out over the offseason and comes back stronger we can see what happens, but don’t talk about using him like that after what we’ve seen multiple times this season.

by mstomper on Sep 27, 2011 9:55 PM EDT reply actions

You know what?

I’m deciding here and now not to be bitter. It would’ve been amazing to end above .500, and how I wish they won this game. Regardless, it’s been an alternately magical and frustrating, but, I think, ultimately rewarding season, and I’ve had a blast watching these guys play. So, let’s go and get the win tomorrow!

As a side-note, though, I’d point out that the offense really never got anything going the entire game; take out Morse’s solo shot and Lombardozzi’s lucky double that led to Desi’s RBI single, and you’ve got an easy shut-out. Let’s face it, Vazquez threw some good stuff, and honestly, he deserves the win. The line-up isn’t the same without Zimmerman in there; why not let him pinch-hit instead of Nix?

Still, Slaten’s definitely one of the only weak links in our bullpen. Would’ve preferred to see…well, pretty much anyone else. Lannan’s “wild pitch”, which Ramos should’ve easily stopped, was also a huge facepalm moment.

Never mind about Zim

Thought he was just getting a rest. Didn’t see that he could possibly be injured. Only one game left, but let’s hope he isn’t.

To be honest, I didn't expect to win this one.

The way it happened was infuriating, though. No wild pitch from Lannan and it’s Storen in there instead of Slaten.

Win tomorrow, and we can go out on an even more positive note. I wouldn’t complain about 79 wins, but 80 would look a lot better. No way did I expect this team to win that many games. We haven’t hit Volstad that well, but I like our chances with him much better than with Vazquez.
