Washington Nationals Reportedly Sign Will Rhymes To Minor League Deal

Kim Klement-US PRESSWIRE

According to a report by MLB.com's Bill Ladson this afternoon the Washington Nationals signed infielder Will Rhymes, who played for Tampa Bay in 2012, to a minor league contract.

According to a report on Twitter tonight by MLB.com's Bill Ladson (@washingnats) the Washington Nationals signed 29-year-old infielder Will Rhymes to a minor league contract. The Detroit Tigers' '07 25th Round pick played for the Tampa Bay Rays in 2012, putting up a .228/.299/.285 line in 47 games and 137 PAs over which he was worth -0.1 fWAR in his third major league season. So far in his career, the left-handed hitting, right-handed throwing Rhymes has a combined .266/.328/.343 line with 17 doubles, four triples and two home runs in 130 games and 399 PAs, playing the majority of his time at second in the majors before moving to third base for 15 games with the Rays last season. In his minor league career, Rhymes has spent the majority of his time at second, though he's played short, third and some outfield...

MLB.com's Mr. Ladson, writing about the Nationals' middle infield situation, wrote last week that the Nats were in the market for a backup middle infielder with Ian Desmond ensconced at short and Steve Lombardozzi and Danny Espinosa at second, though Lombo played more of a utility role in 2012, filling in where necessary in order to get the at bats Davey Johnson said he would get the 23-going-on-24-year-old to further the young infielder's development. Whether Rhymes is being brought in to compete for/ fill that role (as a backup infielder) or serve as minor league depth is unclear.
