Washington Nationals And Ryan Zimmerman Reportedly Agree On Extension. Announcement Expected Today...

9:12 AM UPDATE: More from ESPN.com's Mr. Olney on Twitter: "Some of you have asked; here's the answer: Zimmerman's 6-year deal, plus option, is on top of current contract. Team controls through 2020."

9:06 AM UPDATE: Both ESPN.com's Buster Olney and ESPN and XM's Jim Bowden are writing on Twitter this morning, as Mr. Olney did, that, "The new deal for Ryan Zimmerman is for six years, with a club option on a seventh year."

8:12 AM: After over a year of negotiations and several missed "deadlines" yesterday, former D.C. GM Jim Bowden wrote on Twitter (@JimBowdenESPNXM) early Sunday morning that, "Ryan Zimmerman and Washington Nationals are expected to have a press conference PRIOR to Sunday's workout to announce his contract extension." Early this morning, both Washington Post writer Adam Kilgore and MLB.com's Bill Ladson (@washingnats) have confirmed through sources that the Nats and their 27-year-old '05 1st Round pick have agreed to terms on a contract extension that will keep the third baseman in the nation's capital for a long time. The WaPost's Nats' beat writer (@AdamKilgoreWP) wrote on Twitter this morning that, "The Nats and Ryan Zimmerman have agreed to a contract extension, source says. A press conference expected to come after today's workout."

Star-divide

Details of the extension weren't immediately available. CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman (@JonHeymanCBS) wrote on Twitter earlier this week that he was, "Hearing it will come in around $18M per." The Nationals and their first 1st Round pick agreed on a 5-year/$45M dollar extension in 2009 that would have paid Zimmerman $12M dollars this season and $14M in 2013, but the speculation has been that the last two years of that deal will likely be folded into the extension which is rumored to be an eight-year deal. The last hurdle, according to reports this weekend was some sort of no-trade protection that the seven-year veteran felt he deserved because he was willing to accept a team-friendly deal coming off an injury-shortened season which saw him hit 21 doubles and 12 HR's in 101 games and 440 PA's over which the third baseman had a .289/.355/.443 line.

The right-handed hitting and throwing infielder drafted out of the University of Virginia with the fourth pick in the '05 Draft finished second in Rookie of the Year voting behind the Marlins' Hanley Ramirez in 2006. In 2009, Zimmerman made his first All-Star appearance and went on to win the NL Gold Glove and Silver Slugger that season. The 6'3'', 230lb infielder earned another Silver Slugger in 2010, but his '11 campaign was limited by an abdominal tear which eventually required surgery. After returning to the lineup in mid-June last summer, Zimmerman had a .283/.342/.436 line in 93 games and 403 PA's. In his first seven MLB seasons, Zimmerman's averaged a .289/.355/.443 line with a 162-game average of 41 doubles and 25 HR's.

More details when they're available...

Well that is good news

first thing in the morning.

As Zim said in prior days, I hope his team-friendly deal leaves money on the table to sign the other guys later down the road.

all but officially

I don’t know if the Expos ever named a captain (though Gary Carter was named captain of the Mets after leaving Montreal), so we might have never had one as a franchise. I don’t think it’s overdue to make it official, but some time in the next 2 or 3 years it would be appropriate. It’s a special honor. Only 2 clubs in MLB currently have captains.

by dc Roach on Feb 26, 2012 9:45 AM EST reply actions

That's a pretty good group

Although we’ll see aboot 2019 when it gets here. Oddly, Tulowitzki, Kemp and Zimmerman were all born less than three weeks apart in 1984 (Kemp 9/23, Zim 9/28, Tulo 10/10).

by d_c_guy on Feb 26, 2012 12:04 PM EST up reply actions

As has been pointed out previously,

Zimm outperformed Kemp for much of his his career before last season, and if he is healthy, and his new throwing motion looks like it did at the end of last season, Zimm offers much greater defensive value than Kemp.

I don't disagree; hopefully Zim has the kind of breakthrough season that Kemp had this year

My point was that Kemp, like the others in that group, is pretty good at baseball. And that it’s downright weird that over half of the group were born at essentially the same time.

Well to say the least

Seems like a great contract for both sides. It’s important to me seeing Zimmerman sign an extension and keep with the club for a long time, because I still have the burning memories of seeing player after talented player walk out the door for greener pastures. While this deal certainly isn’t a tremendous team discount, it’s still a great deal for both sides.

This season already feels like a winning one.

It's a 6/100 contract with 10M deferred until whenever he retires

That brings the value down by a considerable amount in real monetary terms.

by dc Roach on Feb 26, 2012 2:25 PM EST up reply actions

It just shows that behind Strasburg and Harper, most people don't know much about the Nationals.

Him and Tulowitzki are on par with each other, and yet they view one as a team-friendly contract and the other as an undeserved contract. Offensively, both players hit around .300, smack 20-30 HRs a year, have similar OBP and don’t steal very much(Although Tulo is a little more of a factor). Defensively, both are elite at their positions. Not to mention that Tulo also has dealt with the injury bug.

Zimmerman came back strong at the end of last season and is more than worth what he will be paid. That’s all that matters and Rizzo did the right thing, even if he gets heat from the non-local media.

That was the best way I could see to make him comfortable

if the Nats for some reason trade Zim, the hometown discount disappears, and the new team pays the full amount. Makes it harder to trade him, which can be a positive or a negative (depending on what you think will happen with Zim previously, and how awesome you think Rendon will become)

The Official Word From Mike Rizzo on Rendon on MLB Network Radio:

“The short-term plan right now is we’re going to keep him comfortable and we’re going to keep him as a third baseman when he gets sent down the minor leagues this year. That could change in the course of the season or the offseason or next season, but as of right now he hasn’t played a professional game for us yet. So we’re going to keep him comfortable, keep him at third base. Davey already has him working out at SS and 2B to fit him into some major league games here at Spring Training but the short-term plan is to put him at 3B to start the minor league season as a third baseman and then we’ll see how accelerated his bat is and his game is and then at that time we’ll probably make some alternative plans and see how far along his developmental curve is.

“It’s one of those special sounds off the bat in the early returns in batting practice and we think that we’ve got a really good one on our hands.”
