A few minutes after MLB.com's Bill Ladson reported on Twitter that he'd spoken to outfielder/bench option Jason Michaels and learned, "... that he will not make the #Nats' 25-man roster," though, "He is willing to start the season in Triple A," the Nationals also announced that in addition to optioning Michaels, infielder Andres Blanco and left-handed reliever Atahualpa Severino have also been sent to minor league camp. The moves trim the Nats' roster to 34 players. Michaels, 35, was competing for one of the final bench spots with Chad Tracy, Brett Carroll and Xavier Nady. Blanco, 27, was competing with Steve Lombardozzi for a role as a utility man in the Nats' infield. Severino, 27, who made his MLB debut last season, was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse, where he pitched last season and was (1-2) with one save, a 4.50 ERA, 3.98 FIP, 6.47 BB/9 and 10.69 K/9. Michaels, as MLB.com's Mr. Ladson noted, is reportedly willing to go Triple-A. Both Michaels and Blanco had opt-outs in the deals they signed this winter, and Davey Johnson told reporters this morning, as recounted by the Washington Post's Adam Kilgore (@AdamKilgoreWP), that he, "... anticipates the Phillies will have interest in Blanco." As reports from Florida this morning note, the decision to reassign Blanco means that 23-year-old Steve Lombardozzi has likely made the Nats' Opening Day roster. More info when it's available...
