Nationals Add Sammy Solis, Michael Taylor And Aaron Barrett To 40-Man; Designate Fernando Abad And Tyler Robertson For Assignment

Evan Habeeb-USA TODAY Sports

The Washington Nationals announced three additions and two subtractions from their 40-Man Roster this afternoon as the Nats set about protecting players who were eligible for selection in the upcoming Rule 5 Draft which takes place on December 12, 2013.

In order to protect eligible players from selection in the Rule 5 Draft, MLB teams had to add those players to their 40-Man roster before today's deadline. In a press release this afternoon, the Washington Nationals announced that they had made three additions to their 40-Man Roster, adding 25-year-old, 2010 2nd Round pick Sammy Solis, 22-year-old, '09 6th Round pick Michael Taylor and 25-year-old, 2010 9th Round pick Aaron Barrett to the 40-Man roster.

In order to make room at the roster, which was at 39 following the decision to add 24-year-old, '07 3rd Round pick Steven Souza, Jr. to the 40-Man recently, the Nationals designated 27-year-old left-hander Fernando Abad and 25-year-old former Twins' prospect Tyler Robertson for assignment, leaving them with 40 on the 40-Man in advance of the 2013 Rule 5 Draft.

The Rule 5 Draft will take place at the end of the upcoming Winter Meetings which take place from December 9-12.

As MLB.com explains it, "Players who were signed when they were 19 or older and have played in professional baseball for four years are eligible, as are players who were signed at 18 and have played for five years. All players on a Major League Baseball team's 40-man roster, regardless of other eligibility factors, are 'protected' and ineligible for the Rule 5 Draft."
