The Nats are 7-5. They are in 3rd place. They are 4 games behind the Braves. And yes, it has only been two weeks.
BUT, there is more to this story than "it's early."
I would submit, that of those 5 losses, only 2 were truly unmitigated losses.
15 - 0 against the Reds and 9-0 against the Braves. But the other loss to the Reds was a cheapy. The Reds only hit ONE extra base hit (a double leading to two runs). The rally in the first inning started from weak grounders. The Reds' runs were driven in on a weak ground-out, a fielder's choice, and two chop singles that squeaked through the infield. In fact, one of those singles would have been a routine ground ball had the infield not been playing in.
9-0 was a thumping, for sure. But the other two losses were based on errors. April 12 saw the tying run cross the plate on a Zimmerman throwing error. And on April 13, Zim made another error that would've ended the inning. Instead we got a Gattis homer.
But the pitching looks weak. Gio got rocked. We are 20th in ERA 24th in WHIP, 25th in BAA. But you need to believe that Stras and Gio's talent will win out over the long haul. Let's hope we can get started by whooping up on the Marlins.
