Series Preview: Pittsburgh Pirates (57-39) @ Washington Nationals (48-50)

Joy R. Absalon-US PRESSWIRE

Yesterday was ugly. But thanks to the Chicago White Sox and the Pittsburgh Pirates, who are coming to town, the Nationals remain in the same place they were prior to yesterday's debacle. The Nationals get right back on the horse with a four game series against the NL Wildcard-leading Pirates, and they say your momentum is only as good as your next starting pitcher. Good luck, Dan Haren.

Hitter to Watch
Andrew McCutchen

Andrew McCutchen actually struggled in the first part of the season, something you wouldn't really notice going by his .306/.379/.489 line and 12 HR, 51 RBI. However, his last 30 days have helped to bring that line up quite a bit. Over that period, he is 30/83 (.361/.442/.627) with 5 HR and 15 RBI. He also drew 12 walks and struck out 15 times. So, to do the calculations, 41.6 per cent of his season home runs have come in the last 30 days, 29.4 per cent of his RBI and 31.5 per cent of his walks. The Pirates are in a playoff position right now, and they just got their best player to be playing his best baseball. That's scary for the rest of the National League, including the teams chasing them hoping for a collapse like last season. A group that includes the Nationals.

Pitcher(s) to Watch
Pirates Bullpen

I could have gone with Gerrit Cole trying to exact revenge for what Stephen Strasburg did to the Pirates during his Major League debut, or I could have gone with Francisco Liriano who has had a bounce back year that no one predicted. But, the real story of this season for the Pirates has been their amazing bullpen. In the last 30 days, the Pirates bullpen has pitched 79.2 innings. In that time, they allowed 15 earned runs. That's a 1.70 ERA for those wondering. For a team like the Nationals whose runs have come at a premium, they can't count on getting to the Pirates bullpen for some breathing room. They will need to get runs early, otherwise it can be a very long series.
