One half of the deal was announced last night. The Washington Nationals acquired 33-year-old veteran outfielder and right-handed bench bat Scott Hairston from the Chicago Cubs in return for what was initially described only as an "A-ball" pitcher by reporters. The Nats made the official announcement this morning. Hairston, the 10-year MLB vet, was acquired along with a PTBNL in exchange for 21-year-old right-hander Ivan Pineyro and a PTBNL according to the Nationals' official press release on the trade.
Hairston is described in the release by the Nationals as a, "veteran right-handed power threat," and they note that the right-handed hitting outfielder, "... tied for second in MLB with three pinch-hit home runs last season."
FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal wrote last night that Hairston, who signed a 2-year/$5M contract with the Cubs last winter, will likely fill Tyler Moore's role on the Nats' bench after Moore, 26, has struggled through the first half of the season, posting a .151/.195/.283 line with five doubles and three home runs in 42 games and 113 plate appearance after posting a .263/.327/.513 line with nine doubles and 10 home runs in 75 games and 171 PAs in 2012.
The Nationals send Ivan Pineyro, 21, to the Cubs. The right-hander who signed as a non-drafted free agent in 2010, was (5-3) with a 3.14 ERA, a 2.93 FIP, 17 walks (2.32 BB/9) and 65 Ks (8.86 K/9) in 13 starts and 66.0 IP at Class-A Hagerstown and (1-0) with a 3.86 ERA, 4.40 FIP, five walks (5.40 BB/9) and seven Ks (5.40 K/9) in two starts and 11 2/3 IP at Class-A Potomac this season before today's trade. He was (13-11) with a 3.17 ERA in three seasons in the Nationals' organization.
