If haven't read my previous article (Until the Fat Lady Sings), then pleasd read it while it is still visible in the fanpost. This article is a continuation from the last one.
Well this has been a fun ride and it looks like we are sprinting to the end. For the marginal playoff chance that we have (1.5% according to ESPN), we need to possibly go undefeated to get to 90 wins (8-1 from here on out). It would surprising but not crazy that we end up at 90-72 but don't make it to the playoffs. However, there is good news over the horizon this time: the Reds and Pirates are about to face each other in one of their two final series.
Why is this important?
Because they are the two teams occupying the WC slots with one GB separation (in favor of Pittsburgh).
Here are their records (as of 9/20):
If either the Pirates or the Reds get swept, this would be a huge plus for us. This would mean that one of the two would fall and we would leap ahead of them(if we can get to 90 wins). However, if they split the series, than we are possibly eliminated. It's that simple. This match-up is inevitable for both teams. They have feasted on a lot of cupcake games until now (except when the take a break and face either the Cubs (Pirates) or the Mets (Reds)).
This is where not only skill but luck comes in. No matter who win, we will be able to gain ground but we need one team to dominate the other in order to get to the playoffs. And we have to face the Cardinals, Diamondbacks and Marlins before the season ends.
So break out your lucky charms (rabbit foot, special coins, the cereal, etc.) and hope that the Nats keep stay good and (http://youtu.be/bBJ9RnbK8G4)
