Thought I’d write a fanpost to gather debate about who may or may not make the trip north come 3/31. So first, let’s take the following spots as given (which we probably knew in mid Feb):
- Stras, Gio, JZimm, a healthy Fister (knock on wood)
- Soriano, Clippard, Storen, Stammen, Blevins
- Harper, Span, Werth, McLouth
- RZim, Desmond, LaRoche
- Ramos, Lobaton
So who fills out the rest of the team? And of course feel free to disagree with particular decisions that have been recently been made (ie Solis to AA, Det to the pen).
Here’s the format I’d suggest, with my prediction* as an example:
"Fifth" starter: T Jordan*
2 bullpen slots: Det, Roark*
Rationale: M Williams made "Det to the pen" announcement 3/17, making him the second lefty in the pen. Det & Roark both have the makeup to handle multiple innings, or even a later inning if some of Clipp/Storen/Sori are spent. Garcia/Cedeno/M Gonzalez start in AAA, and come up in case of injury. Jordan’s good spring "earns" him the fifth starter slot.
Opening day 2B: Rendon
3 bench spots: Hairston, Carroll*, Snyder*
Rationale: Espi & T Mo can get ABs in AAA and get locked in, rather than getting not-enough at-bats on the MLB bench, and be more ready to be called up and immediately contribute in case of injury. Veteran Carroll can hopefully handle spot-starts and pinch-hitting. Having a third catcher will allow the "second" catcher (switch-hitting Lobaton, or Ramos) to be used as another pinch-hitting (or double-switch) option.
*Note: meant to generate conversation as much as to be a valid prediction.
So what do you think? How wrong is the above? What's your suggestion/prediction?
