Nationals: Jordan Zimmermann leaves starts with right bicep cramp, MRI tomorrow

Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

Washington Nationals' right-hander Jordan Zimmermann is going to miss the All-Star Game for the second straight season. The 28-year-old starter left tonight's outing with what was later announced as a right bicep cramp. MRI scheduled for tomorrow.

Jordan Zimmermann left tonight's start for the Washington Nationals with what the team said after the game was a right bicep cramp. The Nats' 28-year-old right-hander was hit hard while he was on the mound against the Philadelphia Phillies in Citizens Bank Park, giving up six hits and four runs in just 3 ⅓ IP before he delivered a 1-2 pitch to Phillies' catcher Cameron Rupp then motioned to the dugout.

The Nationals' trainer, pitching coach Steve McCatty and manager Matt Williams went out to the mound and quickly decided to remove the 28-year-old right-hander from the game after just 53 pitches, 36 of them strikes.

Before the injury tonight, Zimmermann was in the midst of an impressive run which followed a rough month of May.

The Nationals' '07 2nd Round pick was (3-2) in seven starts in June/July with a 1.26 ERA in 50 IP, over which he's walked seven (1.26 BB/9), struck out 46 (8.28 K/9) and held opposing hitters to a combined .204/.233/.260 line.

On the year, he was (6-4) heading into tonight's start with a 2.79 ERA, a 2.71 FIP, 20 walks (1.64 BB/9) and 96 Ks (7.88 K/9) in 18 starts and 109 ⅔ IP before taking the mound tonight in Philadelphia.
