Nationals' lineup in OPACY: Ryan Zimmerman serving as DH tonight vs Orioles

Patrick Smith

Washington Nationals' 3B/1B/LF Ryan Zimmerman is back in Baltimore tonight where he hit three home runs in one game last season. Zimmerman's adding another slash to his position options, serving as the DH in the AL-rules matchup.

Matt Williams wasn't willing to share his plans for the lineup when he was asked before Tuesday's game with the Orioles which player he would use the DH once the Interleague series shifted to Baltimore.

"We have to see how we come out of today," Williams said. "We don't know, I'm not going to say whether we're going to do one guy or the other, because we don't how tonight's game is going to turn out. So, we'll figure it out, it will be posted tomorrow."

"When we get the chance to play in these American League parks, it's a little different than we're used to, but it allows us to get guys off their feet a little bit." -Matt Williams on using the DH in OPACY

Last night's game was, of course, postponed.

Washington's first-year manager did, however, provide some hint of what he had in mind in an appearance on the MLB Network Radio show "First Pitch" this morning when asked about the lineup for the two game set with the O's which starts tonight at 7:05PM.

"We're looking at the possibility of Ryan Zimmerman being the DH today," he said. "We've got a lefty going tomorrow, so we may look at that as well for Adam [LaRoche]. When we get the chance to play in these American League parks, it's a little different than we're used to, but it allows us to get guys off their feet a little bit."

Zimmerman was the choice for the DH spot when the lineup was announced this afternoon:

In 85 career plate appearances in Oriole Park at Camden Yards, the 29-year-old Washington Nationals' 3B/1B/LF is 24 for 77 (.312/.376/.571) with three doubles, a triple, five home runs, eight walks and eight Ks in 20 games.

Three of those five home runs came in one game last season when the Nats' '05 1st Round pick took O's starter Chris Tillman deep three times in three consecutive at bats in what ended up a 9-6 Nationals' loss in spite of his efforts.

Zimmerman went 0 for 4 the next day in a 2-0 loss in his last game in the Orioles' home before tonight.

Zimmerman's penciled in as the Nationals' DH tonight with Anthony Rendon back at third and Danny Espinosa getting a start at second for the first time since June 27th.

In Zimmerman's 10-year MLB career, he's served as designated hitter eight times, going 3 for 31 (.097/.176/.097) with three singles, three walks and 11 Ks in the role.
