Whoa, we traded for Alfonso Soriano (alternative title: "It was all just a dream")

So this is what I get for turning in early last night:

All-Star second baseman Alfonso Soriano was traded by the Texas Rangers to the Washington Nationals on Wednesday night for Brad Wilkerson, Terrmel Sledge and a minor league pitcher.

SBN partner in crime Lone Star Ball notes that said "minor league pitcher" is none other than Armando Galarraga, and that's rather troubling. Lone Star Ball loves the trade, and the Natophere (as well as Natmosphere) isn't really feelin' it---though I tend to agree with Chris's perception that Soriano is so overrated (by the national press) that he tends to be underrated (by statheads).

Still:

  • Our team OBP, awful last year, is heading toward "team replacement level";
  • Galarraga is one of only a handful of real prospects the Nats actually have, or had;
  • I thought Sledge was rumored to be dealt for a real centerfielder (Dave Roberts);
  • I think a fair trade, cost included, is simply Wilkerson-for-Soriano, so this seems a bit much; and.
On the positive side, I suppose this is a nice PR move for the team, since it had beaten down Wilkerson in the press and, given all the Evil Empire fans in Nats Nation, Soriano's presence might resonate with the fanbase.

I'll add more later when I have the chance, but for now, I want to thank the those who started the diaries on the trade. I almost fainted in my Total* when I learned of this.

*Speaking of which, in honor of Terrmel Sledge, there should be a breakfast cereal called "Complete".

hans solo
Bowden is trying to build the solo home-runs all-stars in a park that massively supresses homers. No walks/obp and swinging from the heels as much as possible. We're just lucky that Bowden couldn't trade Zimmerman within a year of signing him even if he wanted to...
Bowden needs to be kneecapped ASAP.

trade proposal
Send Vidro over for Jorge Julio. Live arm, y'know. Vidro can DH for us and save his legs. Plus you have Soriano now!

I'd happily do that
And I'd do it without thinking twice.

And I'm well aware of Julio's combustibility. ;-)

I love that it appears that the space restricts didn't even let you finish the thought in your subject line. ;-)

re:
See I figured you guys might just be sick of Vidro's mess. I'm thinking the DH role could help him, and if it doesn't and he spends half the season on the DL for us, too, then at least I don't have Julio. Live arm, y'know. This is mutually beneficial. Who says we can't be friendly?

Well, we did pick up Bernie Castro . . .
. . . really, take Vidro. We insist.

Anyway, I guess Javy's going to be a 1B/DH type now?

re:
It would appear so. Maybe if HE gets hurt Vidro could play first base for us. Who am I kidding, it'll be the return of Jeff Conine.

Niner!
Man, Jim Hunter sucks.

Does he still relate yuk-yuk stories about The Professor, Tom Treblehorn?

Of course he does . . .

You probably don't know this, but I spent all those years with you guys, including the '98-'04 crapfests.
