Around SBN: Steve McNair Dead - Former NFL QB Shot and Killed

2/10/08 Dear Baseball Writers, "Put Away the Press Kits." Love, federalbaseball.com

Newark Star-Ledger Staff writer Dan Graziano, in his Sunday Sports section feature, "10 Spring Trainings To  Watch", lists the Washington Nationals' Viera, Florida Spring home as the 10th camp for baseball fans to keep an eye on as, "...pitchers and catchers begin to file in," Mr. Graziano writes, with the Nationals' pitchers and catchers scheduled to arrive next Sunday, February 17th. And of course, Mr. Graziano starts his comments off with a jibe, writing:

"Normally, you wouldn't pay much attention to Nationals
camp. But when a team assembles a bunch of personalities
like Elijah Dukes, Lastings Milledge and Paul Lo Duca, you
have to expect some interesting stuff to come out. Also in
Nats camp, former Yankees hero Aaron Boone, who's
looking more and more like Joe Hardy every day."

Now...first of all, I'm not sure if Mr. Graziano is comparing Mr. Boone's appearance to Joe Hardy's, as portayed by Tommy Kirk in the 1957 film, ""The Hardy Boys: The Mystery of the Ghost Farm", or possibly Shaun Cassidy's take on the role from the 1977 tv series, "The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries?"...

...Or maybe Mr. Graziano's referring to Francis Joseph "Red" Hardy, a New York Giants pitcher who appeared in 1.1 innings in 1951? I really don't know.

But what I really don't like is the fact that you can sense the air-quotes around the word "personalities" when reading Mr. Graziano's words, "..when a team assembles a bunch of personalities like Elijah Dukes, Lastings Milledge and Paul Lo Duca you have to expect some interesting stuff to come out," as if he and the rest of the country's baseball writers are patiently waiting for one of the three to publicly implode and provide material for their gossip/baseball columns.

Just the other day at federalbaseball.com, I quoted an article by Athlon Sports Annual writer Mike Berardino entitled, "NL Youth Movement", in which Mr. Berardino wrote:

"And let us not forget the rising Washington Nationals,
whose gunslinging GM Jim Bowden added a pair of
controversial youngsters this winter in Lastings Milledge
          (23) and Elijah Dukes (24). If they both reach their vast
potential, they could take their place alongside standout
          third baseman Ryan Zimmerman (23)."

Now, I quote these two paragraphs, not to pick on these two particular writers, but instead to point out how these kinds of "press kit" comments only further the storylines that are bound to follow both Dukes and Milledge throughout their careers. Put simply, the two will always be considered "athetically talented but personally troubled" by the media, regardless of what they accomplish on the field, and each and every time an opposing team's or a national broadcast's announce team talks about or introduces either player, their names and statistics will be followed by these controversial "press kit" anecdotes...

Milledge's rap lyrics...the note in his locker and his high fiving the home fans after a home run, or Dukes' troubles with the law, drugs, domestic violence and restraining orders...I'm already as tired of hearing these stories as I am of tired of hearing about the fact that Nick Johnson is Larry Bowa's nephew, or about how John Patterson voided his first contract on a technicality, or Dmitri Young was discarded by the Detroit Tigers two seasons back, (Though, oddly, I never get tired of hearing about how tall Jon Rauch is, or about the flatness of Chad Cordero's brim?), instead of maybe...

...talking about the fact that the Nationals have their starting pitching set heading into the Spring for the first time in their three-year existence as mlb.com's Bill Ladson noted the other day in his article, "Healthy Patterson ready for full season":

"For the first time in Nationals history, there is no talk
about trying to put a rotation together. Entering Spring
Training, Washington is going with Patterson, Shawn Hill,
Jason Bergmann, John Lannan and Matt Chico. Patterson
believes the pitching staff can surprise opponents this
year, provided that everybody stays healthy."

...or maybe about the simple fact, as told in Mr. Ladson's title, that John Patterson is once again healthy after two years of arm trouble, and ready to return to being the "Big Nasty" Nationals' fans remember from 2005. There...isn't it nice to end on a positive note?

Joe Hardy
I am not so old that I should know who Joe Hardy is and my readers should not! Check here for the real reference: http://www.musicalheaven.com/Detailed/994.html

As to your comments, you make a good point. The benefit of the doubt is a worthy pursuit, and the idea that past transgressions must follow a player for his whole career is unfair.

It's a poor sportswriter who can't take criticism, so I thank you for your admonishment and pledge to keep it in mind in the future, as it pertains to these players and others.

Oh, you meant JOE Hardy!
Mr. Graziano-

I kind of ignored the obvious possibilities for your Joe Hardy reference for comic effect, but this reference did escape me.

I did write that I wasn't picking on any writer in particular, but that's sort of like saying, "No offense, but..." before saying something offensive.

My beef with the "press kit" anecdotes about baseball players comes more from watching mlbtv.com for my Nationals games and having to here opposing announce teams recycle the same stories about the Nationals' players.

The labels players are given early in their careers often follow them throughout their time in the Majors. I mean, we're still talking about how skinny and speedy Barry Bonds is after all these years, right?

Thanks for checking in.

Dear FederalBaseball: Put Away The Crap!
Mr. Graziano only points out what the readership has been saying for months.  These "kids", er, "personalities" have been give more than enough chances and still the transgressions continue!

"...and having to here opposing..."  Isn't it "hear?"  Quit 'yer bellyachin', be glad that you are not a Pats fan.  Baseball is the opposite of marriage (The Death Of All Hope)...you heard it here first...Play Ball!

National Prospects This Year
First off, I agree that was a bit unfair.  It was thing to point out that these players have had a history of incidents, but quiet another to imply these incidents will a source of entertainment.

On another note, how do people feel about the Nationals prospects this year?  I think they have assembled some decent young talent, but they have far too many holes to hope to compete at this stage of the game.  I think they are looking at an 85-90 loss season.

National Prospects This Year...
...I'm just tired of hearing people take sorta-cheap shots at two young players who could use a break. Milledge and Dukes have earned the criticism, to a differing degrees, but how long will they have to stay "out of trouble" before people just start talking about the onfield activities.

I think if the Nationals pitching can get through six innings and hand the ball to the pen with any sort of lead the Nationals could compete for third in the NL East. But seriously, if the starters stay healthy (hee hee) I don't think a Wild Card run is completely out of the picture...

Did I just say that? Well they were on the far reaches of a Wild Card race in '05, and the '08 squad is far better...Are the Braves and Marlins better than the Nationals? Are the Mets and Phillies that much better? Let's just say I'm a positive thinker...

I can't wait to see what kind of offense the Nationals can get out of this lineup...

That would make...
---marriage -(The Life of No Despair)-if i followed your calculations correctly, Mr. Sparkay.  I'm confused.
Counting on Patterson and Hill to be healthy ?  I hear Kevin Brown is available.  how about 'BigBart' Colon or Kris Benson and his 'Better Half'.   maybe the Nats could work out some deals for Gustavo Chacin or Prior and Kerry Wood.  maybe get Gagne to close ?  they could have the best Disabled List Pitching Staff of all time.  i'd rather have Corey Patterson and Glenallen Hill then count on these two to lead my pitching staff.  my money's on an All-Kids'-Staff before your B-Day, Ed.
D.G. (a.k.a Hoya94)  keep rep'n' Jersey and hire Ed to regurgitate useless player bios.

BBooster...
Marriage a "Life of No Despair" I think Sparkay needs to recalibrate his sensors...

I actually like Gustavo Chacin, though I don't know if he'll ever be healthy again.

No on Gagne, in spite of the french-canadian heritage.

Don't say Corey Patterson's name around here. He's still unsigned and I don't want anyone getting any ideas.

I'd love an all-kids' staff with the "kids" in the Nationals' system.

"..regurgitate useless player bios?" No thanks. (Now Get To Know Your Nationals Coaches) there's an idea I can get behind...Like the flat-tax.

Let's be honest, Sparkay...
You're the only member of the readership still bashing Milledge. In fact...

You might be the only daily member of the readership, period. So thanks again for your comments and helpful edits!! Seriously. (But ease up on Milledge already. At least wait and see what he does in DC...)

Play ball!!!
