Nats Recaps: Doghouse's WPA Posts + More
Washington, D.C. resident Doghouse takes a look at how each game was decided, play-by-play, pitch-by pitch
Game 13 WPA: C.B. Bucknor may actually be blind. Despite that, Nats win 3-1.
Scherzer pitched well, the offense was enough, and although the bullpen sputtered a bit in the 9th, it managed to record the 4th out in time.
Game 12 WPA: All Harper, all the time. Nats walk off Phils 6-4 on dramatic Bam-Bam bomb.
Gio pitched well enough, although some shaky D and a shakier bullpen might have lost things if not for some Harper homers.
Game 10 WPA: Hey, Murphy! It’s your bobble-day! Nats walk off Phils 3-2 in 10.
Stras pitched well, the bullpen was nails, Tony 2-Bags returned, and Murph had the big hit.
Game 9 WPA: Practice?! Nats lose 6-1 to Cards
Scherzer was wobbly, the bats were quiet, and I think Eaton was the only one who showed up to play.
Game 8 WPA: Wait ‘til Murph heats up. Nats beat Cards 8-3
Another solid Gio outing, and Murphy keeps on hitting.
Game 7 WPA: Your new “Mr. Nationals” Matt Albers. Nationals defeat Cardinals 14-6
This was not the most cleanly played game, but, hey, RESULT, amirite?
Game 3 WPA: Deepest bullpen in the league? Nationals lose to Marlins 4-3 in extra innings...
Game 3 WPA: Deepest bullpen in the league? Nationals lose to Marlins 4-3 in extra innings...
Game 1 WPA: Just like we planned. Nationals win, 4-2 over Marlins
Stras was solid enough, the speedsters were speedy, but the small ball was not the way of today.
NLDS Game 5 WPA: I blame WMATA. Nats lose 3-4
It was a tightrope all night, with decisions to be second-guessed, opportunities taken and missed, and too much of the wrong kind of drama.
NLDS Game 4 WPA: Rats. Nats lose 5-6
The Ross/Reynaldo monster was not as effective as we'd hoped, and the bats and bullpen sputtered at the finish line after a valiant effort.
NLDS Game 3 WPA: I'll wait. Nats win 8-3
Gio was about like usual for the postseason, which isn't great, but the bullpen was NAILS and the bats really came through.
NLDS Game 2 WPA: Into the wind. Nats win 5-2
Roark didn't eat so many innings, but the team picked him up with solid relief and activation of LOBATRON:[HITTING MODE]
NLDS Game 1 WPA: Choose your g04+. Nats lose 3-4.
Scherzer wasn't the greatest, but it was the LOBsters that really bit tonight.
Game 162 WPA: Triumphant Spencer Kieboom Debut!
Max was shaky, doing better at the plate than on the mound. Fortunately, the rest of the Nats were also busy with the bats.
Game 159 WPA: Who goes, who stays? Nats win 5-3
Ross and Rey do their tandem-start thing again, and the Nats come through with enough offense to make it work.
Game 157 WPA: 19 for 19. Nats win 4-2
Max struggled a bit, and the Nats were absent at the plate until a dramatic 6th-inning rally capped by a Rendon homer.
Game 155: Messy triumph of the hungover. Nats win
This wasn't the best-played game, but a win's a win. Let's hope Harp's okay.
Game 154 WPA: There is no wrong pipe. Nats win 6-1
Ross only made it through three, but Rey was great in long relief and the Nats came through with runs both clean and clowny.
Game 153 WPA: Keep driving. Nats lose 5-6
Gio was not the greatest, but the bullpen couldn't hold it, and the bats couldn't score it.
Game 152 WPA: Familiar hero. Nats win 8-3
Max had a pretty good start, although he wobbled a bit at the end, but the big story is ZIM IS ALL BETTER NOW.
Game 151 WPA: Slumping. Nats lose 0-1.
Roark pitched pretty well, but the Nats just couldn't bring anyone around, despite a couple of chances.
Game 150 WPA: Even Sunday-er lineup. Nats lose 3-4
Cole's outing wasn't horrible, and the bullpen backup wasn't a disaster, either, but the bats just couldn't come through quite enough.
Game 149 WPA: Waterlogged. Nats lose 2-6
I'd forgotten Joe Ross was on this team, but he has a decent rehab start, even if the bats and bullpen let it get away.
Game 146 WPA: All on the battery. Nats win 1-0
There was some nice defense, too, but it was Roark and Ramos that did the lion's share.
Game 145 WPA: Not quite. Nats lose 3-4
Cole wasn't awful, the bullpen was good during regulation, and the bats staged a dramatic rally late. Extras didn't work out, but at least it was over quickly.
Game 144 WPA: Single digits. Nats win 8-1
Latos turns in a surprisingly good outing before getting hurt, but the rest of the Nats pile on the runs.
Game 143 WPA: Is Gio serviceable? Nats win 3-2
Gio had a pretty solid outing, which is good because the Nats were only good for a few runs.
Game 142 WPA: Prost! Nats win 3-0
Scherzer soldiered through an over-long but effective outing and Harper came through with the dramatic, late-inning hit and some frankly terrible at bats earlier.
Game 141 WPA: All about the Trea. Nats win 5-4
Trea Turner is determined to waste his speed by hitting dingers instead of bunting for hits, but I guess I shouldn't complain.
Game 140 WPA: Can we go to bed early? Nats lose 1-4
Cole pitches reasonably well except for keeping balls in the yard. The rest of the Nats hit balls hard straight at people for a sum total of no offense. At least it was over before midnight.
