8/17/07 A New National, And The Results Are In...

New, 1 comment

National Public Radio (NPR) talk show host Brian Lehrer is always sure to note, when he conducts exit or opinion polls, that the process is, in his words, "thoroughly unscientific," but the responses more often than not reflect the actual results of whatever topic is under examination.
It appears Federal Baseball's latest polls also accurately reflect the actual needs of the Nationals themselves. Of the free agent options provided as options for the Nationals to choose from this offseason, the first four choices out of the 20 votes cast were for outfielders. Twenty-four hours into the polling, Torii Hunter, the Minnesota Twins acrobatic center fielder led the vote-getters with twenty-five percent of the vote, followed closely by Philly center fielder Aaron Rowand, and Reds outfielder Adam Dunn at twenty percent each and the Braves Andruw Jones at fifteen percent.
Apparently, not only the fans felt the Nationals needed help in the outfield. Published reports on the Nationals official site and MLB.com state that the Nationals have acquired outfielder Wily Mo Pena from Boston in return for the well-traveled "Player To Be Named Later."
Washington GM Jim Bowden has made no secret in the past of his desire to land the 6'3'', 215 lb outfielder, who has amassed a career .256 BA, with 193 RBI's, 57 doubles, and 67 HR's in six mostly part-time seasons with the Reds and most recently the Red Sox. But the acquisition does raise an interesting question...
Have the Nationals finally given up on Nook Logan right when he seemed to be getting it together? Logan's numbers on the season (.275 AVG, 0 HR's, 11 RBI's and 16 stolen bases) don't reflect the role he's played in the Nationals relative success, nor do they seem to be enough to have nailed down a starting spot.
According to MLB.com's Nationals writer Bill Ladson, the team is expected to move Church to center to make room for Wily Mo Pena in left with Austin Kearns remaining in right. Which leaves Logan out and leads to one last question...

How do you make room for Nook Logan, Austin Kearns, Ryan Church, Ryan Langerhans, Kory Casto, Chris Marrero, Brandon Watson, Wily Mo Pena and DY (who was supposed to head to left next season when Nick Johnson returned)?

Sounds like a question for another "thoroughly unscientific" poll...
