Game two of three at Dodgers Stadium, Los Angeles, CA features:
Jason Bergmann (2-5, 4.56) vs Chad Billingsley (8-4, 3.48)
Washington starter John "Trouble" Lannan was sent down to Columbus to make room for the returning right-hander Jason Bergmann who takes the mound tonight in Dodger Stadium to face Los Angeles' righty Chad Billingsley in the second of three in Chavez Ravine at 10:00 pm EST.
Bergmann injured his hamstring trying to score on a play at the plate, and has been on the DL since July 24th in Philadelphia. In 14 starts before the injury Bergmann was (2-5) overall, and (0-3) on the road, where his ERA dropped from a 3.72 home average to 5.25 away from RFK. Bergmann's yet to pitch in Dodgers Stadium in his young career.
Chad Billingsley gets the home start for LA. The second-year starter has faced Washington just once in his career, in a game Billingsley won with 6.0 innings of work during which he allowed 4 hits, and 1 run while walking 5 and K'ing 5. The losing pitcher in 4 of his last 6 starts, Billingsley is just (2-2) at home, starting in 6 of 16 appearances, and allowing 47 hits and 22 runs in 49.1 inning of work.
The Nationals have dropped four straight on the road including last night's 5-4 loss to these Dodgers, and three straight in Colorado. Bergmann's sinking fastball looks to get the team back on track in the penultimate road game before returning home to face San Francisco in DC on Friday. Washington's scored 9 runs in the last two and lost both, so it might be that a strong return from the DL for Bergmann is just what's needed to right the ship...
* Federal Baseball Poll Results- An overwhelming 23 of 38 votes cast chose Nationals Park as the number one choice for the name of the new DC ballpark. Someone tell the Nationals, so they don't have to bother with their own voting. New POLL*
