Washington Nationals: AFL/DWL Update.

Down 2-0 in the fifth inning, the Phoenix Desert Dogs hit four-straight two-out singles off D-Backs' pitching prospect Cesar Valdez, scoring two runs and chasing the Scottsdale Scorpions' reliever from Saturday's AFL matchup in Phoenix Municipal Stadium. With the score tied at 2-2, Valdez was replaced by another Arizona prospect, left-hander Tom Layne, who walked the Washington Nationals' shortstop of the future Danny Espinosa to load the bases for future DC first baseman Chris Marrero, whose 2-run single was responsible for the go-ahead and eventual winning run. Espinosa ends the game 1 for 3 with a walk and a run scored, Marrero's 1 for 3 with a walk and 2 RBI's. The only other player in the Nationals' system in action was right-hander Jeff Mandel, who gave up a one-out single and an RBI double to D-Backs' first baseman Brandon Allen and Giants' catching prospect Buster Posey, respectively, in the eighth, before retiring the Scorpions without further damage.

• Final Score - Desert Dogs 7, Scorpions 3. - Gameday.

Desert Dogs now 7-4.

Ian Desmond was in the Tigres del Licey lineup Saturday night, batting second and starting at short, and the Nationals' 24-year-old infielder's RBI single in the third gave the Tigres the lead and held up as the winning run in a 5-1 Licey win over Estrellas de Oriente. Desmond finished the night 1 for 3 with 2 RBI's. '09 P-Nats' reliever Atahualpa Severino faced just one batter, popping up fellow DC prospect, infielder Michael Martinez with two on and one out in the eighth to earn his third (H)old of the winter.
