AUDIO - Potomac Nationals Weekly Update. 6/8 - Anthony Masterson.

Players Mentioned: 6/8 Report -

Cole Kimball - The Potomac Nationals started June off with three straight wins over the Salem Red Sox, in which "emerging" P-Nats' closer Cole Kimball recorded two saves. Kimball, 23, a 12th Round in Nationals' pick in 2006 out of Brooklyn, NY, has made already made two stops in Class-A ball in the Nationals' system, starting off with the Vermont Lake Monsters for two seasons before joining the Hagerstown Suns last year and compiling a (6-8) record with a 5.05 ERA in 27 starts and one relief appearance in which he allowed a total of 103 H, 72 ER, 5 HR and 83 walks while striking out 122 in 128.1 IP. Kimball was added to the P-Nats' roster in early May, and he's saved 5 games since then, the second-most on the team behind Atahualpa Severino, who's notched 7 saves. In Mr. Masterson's report he notes that Kimball's numbers, (0-3, 6.23 ERA), "...are deceiving in the sense that he's made 11 appearances and 9 of them have been scoreless." (Update - 6/15 - (0-2) in his last 2 appearances, Kimball's been hit hard, surrendering 8 hits and 4 runs in 2.0 IP.)

Sean Rooney - An 8th Round pick, 241st overall in 2006 out of Saddleback College, the P-Nats' catcher was 11 for 22 for the week ending 6/8/09, leaving the 5'10'' switch-hitter with a .320 AVG, (which Mr. Masterson mentioned in his notes included with this report), would have qualified him for the second-best AVG in the league once he'd compiled enough at bats. Since the 6/8 Report, Rooney's gone 6 for his last 26 with a double, a HR and 3 RBI's in 7 games, and though his AVG has fallen a bit to .313 on the year, were he qualified today, he'd have the 3rd best AVG in the Carolina League. On the year now, Rooney's got 12 doubles, 5 HR's and 24 RBI's, to go with his .313 AVG, a .375 OBP, and a team-high .875 OPS.

Note: As of Mr. Masterson's 6/8 report, Rooney had thrown out 50% of the baserunners who've tried to take a base off him this season.
