AFL Monday: Nats' infield prospect Stephen Lombardozzi singled on the second pitch of Monday's game against the Peoria Saguaros, sending a grounder out to right off Peo right-hander James Avery, a 26-year-old '05 5th Round pick by Cincinnati who worked his way through three levels of the Reds' system in 2010. One out later, Lombardozzi was doubled off first on an inning-ending unassisted DP. The '08 19th Round pick was one of two Nats' prospects in the Scottsdale lineup along with '07 4th Round pick, catcher Derek Norris, who walked in his first AB and hit a sac fly the second time up to get the Scorpions out to a 1-0 lead. With the score 2-1 Scottsdale, Lombardozzi took a leadoff walk in the fifth (after getting HBP in his second AB), moved up on a balk and scored on an RBI single by D-Backs' outfield prospect A.J. Pollock to make it 3-1 Scorpions.
Washington's '06 18th Round pick Adam Carr pitched a scoreless fifth, but gave up three-straight one-out hits in the sixth, allowing Peoria to score two and tie it at 3-3. Scottsdale took the lead back with a run in the top of the seventh to make is 4-3 Scorpions, but Rockies' right-handed pitching prospect Bruce Billings, 24, an '07 30th Round pick, blew a save in the bottom of the eighth when he surrendered two runs on three hits in what ends up a 5-4 Peoria win. Lombardozzi fininshes the game 1 for 3 with a run scored, a walk and a K. Derek Norris is 0 for 2 with a walk and an RBI sac fly. Carr throws 27 pitches, 18 for strikes in 2.0 IP in which he surrenders 3 hits and 2 ER while recording 1 K.
9:35pm in the D.C. tonight for Scottsdale as the Scorpions take on Peoria's second-favorite team, the Javelinas, and then it's 3:35 pm in the East when Bryce Harper plays Wednesday against the Mesa Solar Sox.
Scorpions now 8-4.
