2011 1st Rounder Anthony Rendon was two games and six plate appearances into his professional career with the Class-A Potomac Nationals when he injured his ankle rounding third base after connecting for his first double of the year. Tests revealed what D.C. GM Mike Rizzo told reporters, including the Washington Times' Nathan Fenno, was a "partial fracture" of the 22-year-old infielder's left ankle. The good news? "'This slight fracture probably heals quicker and cleaner than a bad sprain,'" the Nats' general manager told the Washington Times' reporter. It was another injury for a player who'd previously injured his right ankle (twice) and seen his stock in the 2011 Draft drop because a shoulder injury suffered during his final year in college at Rice University.
When Rendon spoke to Houston Chronicle writer Joseph Duarte later than month he thought he was likely done for the year in his first season in the Nationals' system. "'I’m probably not going to come back this year,'" Rendon told the reporter, "It wouldn’t make any sense to come back and play the last month and try and do something big.'" A Nationals' spokesmen, however, told MASN's Byron Kerr that they thought Rendon would definitely be back in action this season.
The Nats' top pick from the 2011 Draft started playing competitively again in late July and has already seen action in 13 games, going 11 for 28, with the Nats' Gulf Coast and New York/Penn League affiliates. Tonight, Rendon returns to High-A Potomac:
