Washington Nationals Sign 1B/RHP Micah Owings To Minor League Deal With Invitation To Spring Training

The Washington Nationals announced on Tuesday that they'd signed both catcher Chris Snyder and reliever Jeremy Accardo to minor league deals with invitations to Spring Training. This afternoon the Nats announced another minor league deal, this one with former pitcher Micah Owings, who's apparently making the transition to first base.

First Chris Snyder, then Jeremy Accardo. Now Micah Owings? Michah Owings? The good-hitting pitcher? The Washington Nationals announced this afternoon that they have agreed on a minor league deal with 30-year-old, six-year veteran Michah Owings, who's now a first baseman?:

The former major league starter with a career (32-33) mark who was always known as a good-hitting pitcher has apparently decided to make a go of it as a fielder after a series of injury issues last season. The 6'5'', 220 lb right-hander discussed the possibility of becoming a part-time player/pitcher last season and played one game at first in the San Diego Padres' system, but eventually underwent season-ending elbow surgery. Owings was an Arizona Diamondbacks' 05 3rd Round pick who was selected by the D-Backs when current Nationals' GM Mike Rizzo was Arizona's Director of Scouting.

The addition by the Nats is the third in the last two days after the Nationals announced signing former D-Backs' catcher Chris Snyder to a minor league deal yesterday before the announcement that they'd also added veteran reliever Jeremy Accardo on a minor league deal. Both players and now Owings received invitations to Spring Training along with their deals. Can Owings make the transition to full-time position player? Can he retake the mound at some point and provide some of the pitching depth the organization needs? He was only listed as a 1B in today's announcement by the Nationals, whether or not he'll continue pitching at all or transition fully to infielder from here on out is unclear... but he's got a minor league deal with an invite.... odd...
