Washington Nationals Announce Acquisition Of LHP Ian Krol As PTBNL In Michael Morse Trade With Seattle Mariners And Oakland A's

The Washington Nationals annouced this afternoon that 21-year-old left-hander Ian Krol was the PTBNL acquired from the Oakland A's along with RHPs A.J. Cole and Blake Treinen in the three-way trade with the Athletics that sent Michael Morse to the Seattle Mariners this past January.

After trading four prospects (RHP's A.J. Cole; Brad Peacock; LHP Tom Milone and C Derek Norris) to Oakland in return for Gio Gonzalez and right-hander Robert Gilliam in December of 2011, the Washington Nationals traded another top pitching prospect, RHP Alex Meyer, to the Minnesota Twins this past winter to get center fielder/leadoff man Denard Span. The acquisition of Span and the decision to re-sign Adam LaRoche left Michael Morse as the odd man out. When Nats' GM Mike Rizzo found a return he liked he traded Morse in a three-team deal with the A's and Seattle Mariners. The M's got Morse, the Athletics got C John Jaso and the Nationals restocked their system, reacquiring Cole from Oakland along with 24-year-old right-hander Blake Treinin and a PTNBL.

"We wanted to make sure we got the right deal," Rizzo told reporters who wondered if the General Manager had considered waiting for the best possible deal, "The right players had to be involved, or we wouldn't have made the deal, and once the right players were involved and players that we really wanted for a talented player like Michael, I didn't find any reason not to do the deal. So when A.J. became part of the deal and we got two others pieces, then that was the deal that I felt was the deal to pull the trigger on."

Cole, Rizzo said, "... was toughest part for me of the package for Gio [Gonzalez]," so the Nationals brought him back. The right-hander was the Nats' 2010 4th Round pick, a pitcher the Nationals liked enough that they signed him to a well-above slot $2M dollar deal to get him to join the organization when he had a commitment to the University of Miami. Treinen, is a 6'4'', 215 lb, 2011 7th Round pick who pitched at high-A in the A's system last season in his second year with the organization, going (7-7) with a 4.37 ERA, 3.59 FIP, 23 walks (2.01 BB/9) and 92 Ks (8.04 K/9) in 24 games, 15 starts and 103.0 total innings pitched.

Today the Nationals announced the name of the PTNBL, the final A's prospect they acquired to complete the deal that sent Morse to the Mariners:

Krol, 21, is an '09 7th Round pick by the A's out of Naperville, Illinois and Neuqua Valley HS in Naperville. In his fourth season Oakland's system, the 6'1'', 180 lb left-hander was (2-9) in two stops in the Athletics' organization in 2012, with a (1-7) record, 5.21 ERA, 4.27 FIP, 2.50 BB/9 and 8.24 K/9 in 21 games, 15 starts and 86.1 IP with the High-A Stockton Ports and (1-2) with a 5.06 ERA, 1.89 FIP, 1.69 BB/9 and 8.44 K/9 in eight games and 10.2 IP with the Double-A Midland Rockhounds. The acquisition of Krol completes the January 16th trade and adds another young arm to the organizational ranks.
