For the first time this Spring, the Washington Nationals and Philadelphia Phillies meet this afternoon in Clearwater, Florida's Bright House Field, the Phillies' Spring home. On the mound this afternoon, in Grapefruit League action, Stephen Strasburg, the Nats' 24-year-old, '09 no.1 overall pick, who makes his third start of the Spring. Throwing for Philly today is 35-year-old right-hander Roy Halladay, the two-time Cy Young Award-winner who's preparing to play his 16th major league season. In Strasburg's first two starts this Spring, the right-hander has given up six hits, two walks and three earned runs in 5.0 innings, over which he's K'd seven. Halladay has given up four hits and two runs in two starts and 4.1 IP, walking one and striking out five in his first two Grapefruit League outings.
The Nationals beat up on the Astros yesterday as the Phillies and Cole Hamels were getting their clocks cleaned by the Dominican Republic's WBC team in an exhibition game. The lineup the Phils and Halladay face today is slightly less intimidating filled as it is with a mix of Nationals' veterans and prospects. The Nationals have Denard Span leading off with Steve Lombardozzi in the two-spot, and after that it's Anthony Rendon (7 for 17, 3 2B, 2 HR), Tyler Moore and Corey Brown, Chris Marrero, Carlos Rivero, Matt Skole and Jhonatan (Onion) Solano. Seriously, who's going to miss the first Rendon vs Doc matchup? Skole vs Halladay? Oh, and it's all on MLB.tv. That's right, live baseball from Florida while it's snowing up and down the East Coast. If you can't watch this afternoon's game live it's being replayed on the MLB Network tonight at 9:00 pm EST, but we'll be watching and following along live here in today's GameThread.
