Game 34 WPA: Just harrowing enough. Nats 5, DET 4

Haren cruises through 5, then makes it interesting. The Nats run up some early offense, then take a break to be sporting. The bullpen allows some runners and hard-hit balls, but the defense is there and the curly-W ensues.

  • P2K > P2C: Dan Haren (-7.6%) goes 6 IP with 3 Ks and walk, nearly getting out with only 1 ER until coughing up a 3-run bomb with 2 down in the 6th (-19.8%).
  • Close to the apology article: Adam LaRoche (+13.7%) is 2-4 with single+error to put the Nats up by 2 in the 1st (+10.7%) and another RBI single to tack on the winning run in the 2nd (+5.7%).
  • Getting back into form: Ryan Zimmerman (+12.3%) is 3-4.
  • Shutdown! Shutdown! SHUTDOWN!! Ryan Mattheus (+9.2%), Drew Storen (+11.5%), and Rafael Soriano (+15.2%) earn shutdowns in the 7th, aeyth, and 9th, respectively, each allowing one hit with one strikeout.
  • Speaking of speedy outfielders: Denard Span (+4.4%) is 2-3 with a double to lead off the game , a HBP, and some nice glovework in CF. Roger Bernadina (+8.5%) is 1-2 with a walk and a bunt single to keep the first-inning rally going.
