There's only one change to the lineup Davey Johnson intended to field for the series opener with Minnesota before it was rained out last night. Instead of Steve Lombardozzi in left it's Roger "The Shark" Bernadina this afternoon for the first game of three the Nats and Twins will play in the next 48 hours. This afternoon's game gets underway at 4:05 pm EDT with Gio Gonzalez on the mound against the Twinkies' Kevin Correia. Here's the Nationals' lineup for today's game:
#Nationals lineup vs. MIN: Span 8, Werth 9, Zimmerman 5, LaRoche 3, Desmond 6, Rendon 4, Bernadina 7, Suzuki 2, Gonzalez 1— Nationals PR (@NationalsPR) June 8, 2013
There were a few updates on Stephen Strasburg before today's game. The 24-year-old right-hander was placed on the DL this past week with a right latissimus dorsi strain, but according to reports from Nationals Park today, the Nats' '09 no.1 overall pick threw off the mound without incident for the first time since the injury forced him out of the game after two innings in his last start in Atlanta:
Strasburg had a great bullpen today, Davey said. He'll throw a sim game Tuesday and will be on track to come off the DL & start the 16th.— Dan Kolko (@masnKolko) June 8, 2013
Strasburg: My bullpen went well. "I didn't really have any doubts I was gonna feel good just based on how I've been feeling the last 2 days"— Rich Campbell (@Rich_Campbell) June 8, 2013
Washington Times' writer Rich Campbell quotes Davey Johnson from before today's game telling reporters, "'He had a great bullpen. Threw the heck out of the ball. Had no symptoms from the injury. He’s good to go.'" The Nationals will, however, need a starter for Wednesday's game in Colorado, though there's no official word on which pitcher will be called up to fill in for Strasburg.
Today's game gets underway at 4:05 pm EDT this afternoon.
