Game 86 WPA: Offense is cool. Nats 8, Pads 5

New, 7 comments

Gio is slightly shaky, Stammen serves meatballs, but the Rhino remains unstoppable. Also, other people hit and walk and stuff. The Nats score many runs, and there is great rejoicing (yay!).

Owie! But good for +5.2% WPA!

  • Sharp enough: Gio Gonzalez (+1.7% pitching, +3.8% hitting) has some long innings early, but ends up going 6.2 with 3 ER on 5 Ks and 1 BB, which is somehow enough to win with the new "score runs" style of offense. Speaking of which, he takes one for the team at the plate, getting HBP while trying to sac bunt to load the bases in the 2nd (+5.2%).
  • Rhinos drive stick? Wilson Ramos (+17.1%) is only 2-4 tonight, with a 2-RBI single to put the Nats ahead in the second (+14.8%), and an RBI single in the 3rd for the eventual winning tally (+3.2%).
  • Resurgent: Denard Span (+9.3%) is 2-4 with a two-RBI double in the 2nd-inning rally (+13.1%). Jayson Werth (+11.3%) is 3-4 with an RBI groundout.
  • [Sad trombone]: Craig Stammen (-4.3%) doesn't quite get a meltdown when he comes in to get the last out in the 7th but lets Gio's runner (plus two of his own) come around, first.

(H/t to FP on the MASN broadcast for the title.)
