Game 122 WPA: Tanner. Blanking. Roark. Nats 8, RFB 7

This was a long, weird, long, very long game. Let's hope the plunking is over with and that Stras is okay. Also, Roark for Jordan's spot in the rotation?

  • Haunted mound? Stephen Strasburg (-14.3%) never quite gets comfortable, going on 1+ IP with 1 K, 1 BB, 1 HBP and 2 ER (one of which was the walk, which came around on three consecutive WPs!).  Hope there's nothing wrong.
  • Charging Rhino: Wilson Ramos (+14.0%) is 2-5 with a two-out, two-RBI single to put the Nats ahead in the first (+17.4%).
  • Piling on: Jayson Werth (+21.2%) is 2-3 with a double, 2 walks, and a two-out, two-RBI single to tack on in the second (+16.1%).
  • Something of a h3r0: Tanner Roark (+21.3% pitching, +8.0% hitting) throws 4 scoreless in relief, fanning 6, walking 2, and giving up no runs.  He goes 1-2 at the plate, with a booming RBI double to left center (+9.7%).
  • It's Spanish for 'Doug Slaten'*: Fernando Abad (-8.6%) melts down in the 6th, giving up a 2-run homer (-12.4%) along with a K and a walk.
  • SHUTDOWN: Drew Storen (+7.6%) strikes out the side in the 7th.
  • Stat-padder: Ryan Zimmerman (-3.5%) hits a meaningless aeyth-inning solo shot to put the Nats up 7-4 (+6.7%).
  • It's also Spanish for 'Doug Slaten': Rafael Soriano (-41.7%) walks the backup catcher then blows the save on a game-tying, two-out, two-run HR (-49.1%) for another spectacular meltdown.
  • Long haul: Ian Krol (+26.0%) allows a hit and a walk but keeps it tied through the 10th and 11th for a big shutdown.
  • Man of decision: Craig Stammen (+39.0% pitching, -21.1% hitting) walks one and strikes out five to keep it tied in the 12th, 13th, and 14th, but GDPs to end the 14th with runners 1st/2nd.
  • Okay, I'll think about the apology: Adam LaRoche (+31.1%) pads his stats with a go-ahead solo shot in the 15th (+34.6%).
  • Proven Closer: Dan Haren (+18.7%) picks up an unlikely shutdown, giving up a hit but collecting 2 Ks over a scoreless 15th to earn the save.
*(h/t to monkeypuzzle in the game thread for the Abad/Slaten joke... can you believe there was actually a time in this game when an Abad/Slaten joke seemed like it would be the biggest part of this article?)
(Yes, I forgot to update the score from an earlier draft when I first published this.  It's late.)
