Game 126 WPA: Fool's Gold/Gold. Nats 11, Cubs 6

New, comments

Well, that was a bit of a seesaw! The Nats explode with offense, collapse with the pitching, then explode some more offense. Not too shabby, overall.

"It is very difficult." (Actual quote) "BUT NOT-JERRY CRUSH LEFTY!!" (Not an actual quote.)

  • An inning too long: Ross Ohlendorf (-7.0%) does okay through 4, but only gets one out in the 5th, eventually getting tagged for 4 ER with 2 Ks and 2 BBs.
  • Early runz: Kurt Suzuki (+11.9%) is 2-4 with a bases-loaded, two-RBI single to put the Nats ahead in the 2nd.
  • Stat padder: Jayson Werth (+11.2%) cranks a three-run bomb to tack on to the lead in the 3rd.
  • Uneven: Tanner Roark (-24.2%) manages to cash in both of Ohly's runners plus two of his own to tie the game in the 5th. Then he strikes out the side in the 6th.
  • NOT-JERRY CRUSH LEFTY! Scott Hairston (+39.8%) gets a PH appearance against a lefty reliever and promptly jacks a go-ahead, two-out, three-run dinger over the LF wall.
  • Good, but not apology-worthy: Adam LaRoche (+12.5%) is 2-5 with a double.
  • Miscellaneous oddity: Denard Span (-6.8%) hits for the "ground ball cycle" (grounding out to every base, plus short), but then hits an aeyth-inning RBI triple (+3.6%) and later scores for some welcome insurance.
