Right-hander Tanner Roark, 26, was acquired by the Washington Nationals along with RHP Ryan Tatusko in a July 2010 trade that sent infielder Cristian Guzman to the Rangers. Three years later, the Nats announced this afternoon that they had selected the pitcher from Triple-A Syracuse while optioning reliever Xavier Cedeno back to their top affiliate. With Ross Ohlendorf and Ross Detwiler on the DL, the Nationals were in need of pitching and they turned to the Chiefs for Roark, who is (9-3) with two saves in 33 games and 11 starts this season in which he's posted a 3.15 ERA and a 3.00 FIP, with six home runs (0.51 HR/9) and 20 walks (1.70 BB/9) allowed in 105 2/3 IP in which he's struck out 84 (7.15 K/9).

Roark is (6-0) with a 2.05 ERA and a .219 BAA in his last ten games, eight of them starts and as the Nationals note in the press release on today's move he's first among qualified International League pitchers in WHIP (0.99), first in BAA (.217 on the year) and is seventh in ERA. As a reliever, Roark has, "... posted 8.5 strikeouts per 9.0 innings... with a 2.40 ERA and a .178 BAA," and has, "... stranded 10 of 11 inherited runners out of the 'pen."

In order to make room on the roster, the Nationals transferred 27-year-old left-hander Ross Detwiler from the 15-Day to the 60-Day DL. Xavier Cedeno made another quick trip up to the majors after being called up when Ross Ohlendorf was placed on the DL two days ago. Roark, an '08 Rangers' 25th Round pick will be making his MLB debut when he first takes the mound for the Nationals.
