Nationals Acquire LHP Matthew Spann From Rays As PTBNL In David DeJesus Trade

The Washington Nationals announced this afternoon that they had acquired 22-year-old, 6'7'' left-hander Matthew Spann as the PTBNL in the deal that sent David DeJesus to the Tampa Bay Rays last month.

The Washington Nationals acquired 33-year-old outfielder David DeJesus on August 19th in a trade with the Chicago Cubs after they claimed DeJesus off waivers and worked out a deal. The Nationals placed DeJesus on waivers after acquiring him and Tampa Bay claimed him, so four days after acquiring the veteran outfielder, the Nats traded him again, sending the 11-year major league veteran to the Rays in return for a PTBNL or cash considerations.

Former Nats' GM Jim Bowden wrote on Twitter at the time that he thought Nationals had a 22-year-old left-hander headed their way as the PTBNL though he didn't say which 22-year-old lefty it would be:

Tampa Bay Times' writer Marc Topkin reported at the time that he'd been told the Nationals were given a list of Rays' prospects to choose from:

The Nationals announced this afternoon that the 22-year-old southpaw in the deal was Matthew Spann, a 2010 25th Round out of Central High School in Columbia, Tennessee, who moved to the bullpen this season after starting for most of his first three seasons in the Rays' system. Over 59 games and 220 IP, Spann, who's 6'7'', is (14-10) with a 3.03 ERA. In 19 games, four starts and 60 IP this season, the lefty is (4-3) with two saves, a 2.85 ERA, 4.27 FIP, 21 walks (3.15 BB/9) and 35 Ks (5.25 K/9).
